I've read Ragnar's mind and found the key for the Temple of Doom trasure. So what does it open? There is a locked gate at the bottom of the dragon ladder, but the key won't open it. Must I go back to the start, and risk dying of poison? Just where IS that treasure that Ragnar mentions?

Thank you.

The locked door that the key opens is in the same room as the dragon statue (to the left as you enter the room, on the outside wall). There is a chest behind a locked door, containing a diary and random crappy loot, then stairs down to the right to a dead end containing crates, etc, and a grate that can not be opened. It sounds like you found the bottom section, and just need to head up and to the left to get to the door.

When I read ragnar's mind, he just said Lovis would reward him well and made no mention of a key for that treasure. Can I find it if I go back in the temple? Also, is it OK to sell books or should I keep them? I load up on loot pretty fast and they're taking up space. The books and creature parts are burning up my encumbrece, and I know the creature parts will be useful later.

When you ask the necromancer in the cave near the chapel shrine to work one your creature the parts are removed from inventory and will be availible to build the creature (this is availble even before you can summon it).

Non quest/skill/stat/dragon books have no real purpose other than being interesting to read.

Take a look at the creature parts; you only need to keep the best of each type. I kept a list of my current top part stats handy so I could sell any lesser versions before talking to the necromancer, so I wouldn't clutter up the part list.
You can also get rid of potion and enchantment formula by talking to the alchemist and enchanter (any left in your inventory after going into the alchemy or enchantment functions will be duplicates, and can be sold).

Alchemy plants and enchantment gems and minerals are easy to acquire after getting the battle tower, so you can get rid of any you are not going to use. Keep malachite gems, since there is a limited supply in the game, and ginseng (etc) for healing potions, but if you have multiple stacks of the same item, you can safely get rid of the extra stacks.

You can only enter the temple once, but the treasure is not that great anyway. Ragnar should mention loot and the key if you mindread him in the bandit camp (near the freed prisoner that you can trade with) before entering the temple, which spawns the key on the dragon statue's left horn (after climbing up the statue, walk forward until you get to the first wooden plank, turn right, take a step or two over to the horn and look down).
Jagon, inside the temple, thinks of a reward from Lord Laiken for the head of a slayer.
