As much as I'd love to fork out the $40 on steam to buy this game, securom is a red flag.
DRMs are known to install their own drivers and files that mess with normal PC operation, if someone wants to pirate a game they'll do it regardless what type of DRM is used. All DRM is doing is punishing the people that bought the game legally. By using DRM you're asking the game to be pirated with a huge sticker slapped across the whole game's packaging.
If steam isn't DRM enough, then tell me, if I buy Divinity II dragon knight saga from Larian Studio's own store, will it still have the 3rd party DRM: securom, or another?

It still will have SecuROM, but a patch will be released at a later date to remove it (or allow those with digital versions to download a version without SecuROM activation).
The reason places like Steam have SecuROM like everywhere else is it makes it easier to release patches if all versions have the same DRM. (And if it will have the same DRM everywhere, the Steamworks is not a good choice as it requires Steam to be installed, making it unfriendly to other distributors)

I have no idea what kind of DRM the Larianvault version of the game has. Probably Securom also. So far i have nothing to complain about. If you buy the game, you get the key. The game asks the key when installing and finally activates the game online. So far the particular version has been pretty quiet, doesn't complain about Daemon tools or my DVD drives. Also can't really complain about it affecting the game performance in any way. Although my machine is quite aged (core 2 duo e8400, 4 gb RAM, Geforce 8800 gts 512), i can run the game on 1920*1080 res and have most settings on max.

I don't frequent these forums much, so I wouldn't know, but are you speaking on behalf of Larian Studios? It would be nice to know if there are definitive plans to do just this.

As some people posted already on the forum, for our previous games we deactivated the DRM at some point and we'll do the same for this one. http://www.larian.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=422811&fpart=3

I'll be sure to grab a copy when the DRM is removed, however if I find it on special before the DRM is removed, I'll buy and shelve it until it is I suppose.

That's hilarious, I actually feel like trolling now.
I'm from Australia, EBGames retail the disc version for $70.
I'll wait out for $40 digital, or less, when DRM is gone.

Is there some kind of newsletter I can sign up to to be notified when DRM is officially removed?
I don't particularly care for working with cracks or hacks.
Yes, I know all the usual reasons why publishers and developers include DRM but I still have the choice of not buying a game. There are other games. =)

There are not a lot of other new games without any DRM, though...

DRMs will be hacked regardless how tough DRM makers believe they've created them, publishers are being scammed into believing they'll help with piracy.
As one of the mods were saying, they use securom to check how many legit copies were bought then after a while they remove it.
What I don't understand is, regardless of retail or digital download, publishers/devs should still know their sales without securom. Stores do keep track of their sales, or at least serial keys given out in order to need to get more, which more than shows how many have bought the game.

Re-opening this thread, a month later, to say that this game is now for sale on steam 50% off for 1day.
Securom has yet to be removed. I won't put up with this malware installing on my system when I am a legitimate customer.
You've lost many people's money, Larian studios. I bet in 5 more minutes a load more threads about securom will stir up on Steam's divinity II forums, as there's already a few threads complaining about it.
Even if you were publisher forced, so I heard, you could have published it through steam as an indie developer, I don't see how it would be any worse. Would probably do better.

I don't think that Focus has to do sumtin with it. 90% of the profit Larian gets from TV shows and games for kids and otehr multimedia stuff, the RPG games is some kind of hobby for the team. They saved some money, they decided to make Divine Divinity/Divinity series. Such devteams can dictate the conditions to the publishers.
So, I think, the secuROM was purely their decision.

Sigh. Thread. Read it please before post. In Steam, the publisher IS Steam. And I already mentioned financial state of the devteam, they couldn't care less about retarded publisher's conditions.

Well screw them, then. And the publisher is Focus Home Interactive FYI.
