I have 4 GM ram on vista and it still does not allow me to enable high texture? This only happens after i patched it. I also happened to even bought a newer and better graphic card. Nvidiia Geforce GTX 570.

I used to be able to do so.

Sigh.

I don't think Vista recognizes ram over 2 gig unless you're 64 bit. Which would make you borderline.

I'd like to close by quoting Bellegar's famous last rhyme:

The wench must have been a hell-spawned banshee!"

I am 64bit.

And the thing is I did play with high textures before the patch. Now that its all patched, it won't let me enable it, even though I could play with it before.

The game seems to get even more problems with each patch for me.

Try to specify the texture quality in config file and then set it as read only

This is the second time I've heard about this issue with a GTX-570.

DKS (like almost all games) is a 32bit application, and as such it cannot address more than 4GB in total - this includes memory used by your OS (or it couldn't make system calls) and also your graphics memory. So the actualy ammount of memory the game gets is significantly less than 4GB.

My guess is that because the GTX-570 comes with (minimum) 1.25GB of ram (more in some configurations), then it's eating into the 3GB minimum that the game needs in main memory to store high textures on a Windows7/Vista computer.

If your old graphics card is <=1GB, it might be worth trying swapping it back in temporarially and see if high textures work again. Of course if this is the case, then you'd be undestandably frustrated - the GTX-570 is an awesome card, and not being able to push it to it's full potential simply because games are still stuck in 32-bit mode would be really annoying.

Finally I doubt Kein's suggestion will do any good - simply preventing it from overwriting the config won't stop it switching to low textures - it has obviously detected an issue and already switched to low textures before it tries to update the config.

Even if I'm wrong about the memory issue, it could still be something related to the 570 - it seems more than a coincidence that both posts on this issue were using that specific card.

Has anyone else got the game to run high textures with a different (>1GB) card? I'm very interested in this topic because I'm thinking of upgrading my old GTX-295, and I need to stick with NVidia because I use 3D Vision.

2GB less. grin Even on a 64-bit system with eleventy billion gigabytes of memory, a 32-bit process only gets 2GB (or 3GB if you fiddle with the executable). Something I sometimes find myself forgetting, though one of the reasons I upgraded to a 64-bit system was so I could have a bunch of memory-hungry applications running at once: previously when using 32-bit Windows XP, the system itself was a bit too limited as to how much memory it could use in total. But I think someone might've just said that. I wasn't paying attention. :o

So your saying that unless i change my graphic card, I would be stuck with medium textures? This is absolutely ridiculous !

I changed my graphic card so that I could enjoy better graphics, not worse!

OH THE HORROR!!

I should warn you that I'm only guessing here! But I would still like some kind of confirmation that DKS (patch 2) works with a >1GB graphics card, 570 or otherwise...

You've got a newer video card but not top of the line. GTX 580 seems to be top of the line however there might be a 590. Unless your in the 80's or 90's with Nvida, your only getting a card with higher compatibilities with new games. Need to spend the extra few hundred for 'perfection'.

Regardless it is still a very good card (appears you spent about $350 on it) that I'm sure will serve you very well for a very long time and I don't think it is worth spending an extra $200 just for those extra things to show. There is far more about DKS than just graphics!

Also Nvidia releases driver updates that helps improve performance on their cards about every month. www.majorgeeks.com is a great place to keep track of driver updates. Just make sure your getting the Nvidia video driver updates not the mainbaord ones like some guy did a while back.

In a few years from now I'm sure you'll want to play this again and will have a card that will handle DKS perfectly.

About the 32bit issue, this game has been in production for a long time (they started Ego Draconis 6 years ago) so the upgrade to run 64 bit might have only delayed their product even further. Regardless I'm sure DKS will be their last 32 bit project unless they want to push something out by next year with the same game engine.

EDIT:

can't find a GTX 590 for sale but reviews had some numbers that will give an example of what I was going on.
NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 59x boasts a TDP of 375 W. That’s massive when compared to the other GPUs – for example GeForce GTX 580 has got a TDP of 244 W.

TDP: The Thermal Design Power or TDP in short, is the maximum power consumed by a device (graphics card for example) under normal / regular use.

And a futuristic GTX 650 (when ever it will come out) will be more compatible than the 590, but about as powerful as what you have now.

Yes but its very annoying, maybe i'll uninstall all the patches, and just play DKS unpatched just so i can enjoy the high textures.

You can install the hotfix only + copy the Patch.dv2 from latest patch. I'm not sure if custom dv2 support are enabled in hotfix, but worth to try anyway.

I'd E-mail support@larian.com before playing unpatched. If you play unpatched, might run into bugs that will totally stop your gameplay.

I'm such a graphics nerd, that once I have played with high graphics for me, I can't seem to play with medium. I just lose all mood to play the game. So well its has certainly stopped my gameplay indeed.

EDIT- Okay this is really strange, I thought I'll give it one more try before i reinstall the game, so I went in and tried to set the textures to and high, and apply, and viola~ it worked.

Very strange indeed.

Let us know if things "break" for you again so we can try and help.

Glad a miracle has happened, make sure you take time to enjoy the flowers and plants as you murder monsters and cut black ring members heads off.
