I ask that because I basically just run up to someone and left click them while using an occasional ability until it dies. It frustrates me that I can't attack and strafe at the same time or zoom in overhead but whatever.

It seems there is a ton of effort and Creativity put into this game but besides a few spells I guess I feel like every fight in this game will end up being the same. We just stand there hitting each other until one of us dies...

Thoughts? I'm really just trying to figure out if this gets any better, combat wise, or if I'm missing something, and yes I know I can roll out of the way of fireballs etc..

Well, if you raise the difficulty, doing that will end up with you dead (I have been checking that more than a few time) smile

At that point, you have to dodge when opponent swings, jump and so on...

I understand what you're saying and agree with you Micahr. Combat mechanics are nearly nonexistend in this engine. What little there is is as bad as the interface. Great story and graphics tho.

I'd like to close by quoting Bellegar's famous last rhyme:

No one really plays RPGs for "great combat", right?

If I wanted to be able to dodge attacks like mad and style on my enemies with a perfectly placed lightning gun headshot/triple rocket spiral while leaving trails of bio rifle globs to impede pursuers as I reposition, I'd play Unreal Tournament.

Well...yeah, combat could be bit more interesting, but I don't complain.

You can dodge and roll in combat, not just to avoid fireballs, though I don't know if you can attack at the same time, since I didn't take advantage of that option. You can jump and turn that into a melee attack, though.

On the Xbox version of D2:ED the left trigger performs a Target Lock so you stay focused on an opponent while you move around, etc, which zooms the camera to an almost over the shoulder view. I didn't use Target Lock much in human form, but it came in handy in certain situations in dragon form. I think the PC version has a Target Lock function, but it isn't assigned a hotkey by default.

Have you tried starting off combat with a bow, or something? Combat does get more interesting later in the game, as opponents get stronger and you start seeing more archers and mages, but after you choose an approach, etc, the actual mechanics of a melee warrior remain wait / run / Rush Attack to get close to an opponent, and then attack. You can mix up attacks a bit with Whirlwind, and later Thousand Strikes, etc, but it is still basically whacking an opponent repeatedly with something sharp and/or heavy (there is no combat micromanaging with blocking or timed attacks, etc).

About level 12, or so, you will be able to complete a quest that will give you access to a necromancer created creature. You can not control it directly, but it does offer options for a bit more strategy in combat (using it either as a distraction or shield).

"Great combat" often seems to involve the sort of awkward key combinations that my fingers can't keep up with (that's if I can even remember them). I'd rather keep the sense of adventure than end up with sprained knuckles...

In contrast to what I said, while combat in Divinity 2 wasn't OMGSUPARFANTASTIC GOTY material, it's melee system definitely was able to keep me entertained compared to Oblivion/ Beth's Fallout, where melee combat basically devolved to back pedal + mouse spam-and-maybe-a-bit-of-stimpak-spamming-because enemies-won't-stop-trying-to-shoot-my-head-off-with-peashooters. That being said, I still had fun with the games.

It all comes down to what you find to be entertaining, really, and I for one, am easily entertained. Divinity 2 at high levels really gave me the delicious feeling of trampling the mooks under my well-polished plated boots and I loved it(seriously, I LOVE melee in this game). Bethesda's FO series let me punch my enemy's heads off/turn them into scarlet mist even though I just punched him in the knee and I love it. Game X gave me the feeling of X and I X it, that sort of thing. But if you're looking for serious combat, with strategies/tactics/awareness and all that jazz. I'd recommend playing old school shooters like Quake Live Arena, because that's as good as it gets.

I'd definitely love to parry and block and the melee is rather annoying, where there is no flow of animations. Instead you either attack and get hit or you dodge and not attack. But later in the game, with skills the annoyance becomes less of a factor, and I become numb to the annoyance. But the game is so epic, that the annoyances of melee combat fade in comparison to the overall fun. Plus it's quite wild and fun to be attacked by many simultaneously.

Yeah, I hated that too. In DKS Melee became much more fun when I could kill them quickly. That sort of covered over the shortcomings. Seriously though, Mount & Blade has the best system.

I thought the combat was fun in the demo. I really liked the 2h swords combat. The armor look awesome even for a level 6 character

well this is a hack and slash after all. i agree that m&b has the best unmodded system if you want more tactical fighting. best modded goes to OB with Duke Patrick's SCA combat mod. hands down. without it, vanilla OB is meh

Compare to ED?

No conceptual changes at all. Not even a little.
