There doesn't seem to be any way to change your appearance in Broken Valley - you're stuck after you leave Farglow until you get your Battle Tower.

is it always free? I think it's a neat feature, too bad there aren't more personalization options frown

Is there anyone besides me who finds it somewhat weird that an illusionist can actually change your character's gender? silly

Unless the change is supposed to be only illusory - which would raise a whole new set of interesting questions about the people one meets in the game - they might have considered calling themselves transmuters, or metamorphs, or something like that...!

Procrastes, good points. The illusionist could be named differently. But your other point about the NPC's you meet is a fascinating. Even if the process is free for the player (i guess it is?) we would have to pretend that NPC's would have to pay for the service. This should eliminate the poor folks from changing sexes, but perhaps they could save enough to change their hair color.

I think Morganna was originally Morgan personally.

The illusionist service is free, as far as I know. I have only used it once, though, in Farglow, so I'm not totally sure.

Your thought that it is free only for the player is a good one. It could be a special recruitment drive for Dragon Slayers - kind of like a standard discount for army personnel? well - and as for the Dragon Knights, it would be sensible not to overcharge someone who can turn into an giant, firebreathing lizard anyway.

And the idea of everyone being able to change sex at any time, at the drop of a hat, is quite hilarious. Social structures would take a blow, even if they did not completely disintegrate.

...there was actually a case here in Sweden, where a student at some high school decided from one day to another which gender he/she belonged to - and complained to the authorities when the teachers didn't immediately acknowledge his/her current disposition! laugh

It's funny because the explicit purpose of visiting an illusionist is to hide your identity, but change everything about yourself after getting the tower, and Rhode and everyone else will still recognize you!

is it ever actually a gameplay mechanic, like to reduce heat or avoid assassination? Or just for fun?

. . .wait, there's an illusionist in your tower? Where? The tower's not that big, and I'm pretty sure I talked to everyone. I know there's a musician and dancer on the throne dais, there's the 3 runners by the door, there's Sassan in the master suite. Alchemist in the alchemy garden, trainer in the arena, necromancer and limb vendor in the summoning circle, and the enchanter in the workshop (and his wife if you happen to choose Wesson).

As for NPC's. . . I kind of wondered if the guy in High Hall who thinks he's a goblin might actually be one, who was 'transformed' by an illusionist (or actually changed by some other magic)?

As for the person who wondered about people recognizing you after changing your appearance. . . it seems throughout the story that many characters can sense a dragon aura about you. . . Rhode sees it outside the Maxos temple, presumably powerful wizards like Zalandor can. We know that the gypsy in broken valley knows, and ZixZax the Almost Wise could tell.

So, if you change your appearance, but the character can see your aura, then it makes sense they'd know you. . . there's only one dragon knight left, after all.

In FoV there is a quest that you need to change your gender to complete.

In the battle tower, the illusionist is sitting at the dining table in the master's quarters, on the opposite side as the teleporter.
