When I speak to the summoning instructor, he says "Here, take this key to the library..." but I don't get the message "Item Gained", nor does the key show up in my inventory. I also cannot open the door to the library.

Did I miss something?

Did you get Raan's blessing? (in the northern room on the west edge of the level)

You shouldn't need to do anything else to get the key from the first instructor (in the south west corner room). That key opens a door in the hallway they leads to the library, rather than the library itself.

Which door are you trying to open? IIRC, from the hallway you should just be able to walk into the first room of the library, and then you need to talk to the librarian to get access to the other room.

Yes, I did get Raan's blessing, and grabbed it from the container after passing her test.

I spoke with the summoning instructor (SW corner of map) who said he was giving me a key, but no key shows in my inventory.

When I walk over the library (SE down the hallway from the instructor) the door is locked, and I can't open it.

I don't think I can progress any further in the game without accessing the library.

You can get a replacement key using the procedure linked to in the Inventory files topic. I'll have to load my save at the start of act 4 to get the key, and update that topic in awhile. When I do, save before the door, backup your inventory files, replace them with mine, reload the save, open the door, save again, and restore your backup inventory files to that new save.

There is also a way to edit your character's position (Teleporting anywhere) or get through doors or walls, etc (armory trick in act 1). However, it would be better to get the door open, so you can freely pass after that.

I've updated the Inventory Files topic. Sorry for the delay, but I'm in the middle of doing something else (plus, it took awhile to drop all the crap my characters were carrying biggrin ).

Ok, so it appears that drops just aren't working for me in Act IV. When I kill the spider in the components room, it doesn't leave a leg behind.

That is strange... hopefully the extent of the problem is limited. There is already a set of inventory files with the spider leg, but having to redo that procedure repeatedly would be annoying.

Annoying is not the word I would use. I'm now trying to get through the Rune room, and it depends on the monsters dropping a rune to get back out. The monsters aren't dropping anything. That's 12 monsters I would need to do this hack for.

I think at this point I might just give up on this game. It was fun while it lasted.

You only need 1 of the runes, which is in the same set of inventory files as the spider leg.

Well, I was doing good for a while there. Got through all of academy level 3 without incident.
Now I've just defeated Samuel in the wand room, and there is no wand to be found.

I'm going to assume that Samuel drops the wand after he is defeated. If that's not the case, perhaps I'm looking for the wand in the wrong place?

Your assumption is correct; Samuel should drop the rift wand, as well as a charm. I've updated the inventory file topic (and played through to the end of the game, to make sure nothing else was dropped which might be a problem).
Sometimes the wand can drop so it is obscured by the southern wall, and hard to see if a character is not standing nearby, but I assume you already checked for that situation.

After you meet Elder Anlokar and explore his (currently locked) rooms, you can find a hidden teleporter to another room, containing the wooden key and a golden chest (and other loot that may be of more interest). If you run around to the open the wood, stone, silver and gold chests, you can get the level 6 BF key. If the key isn't there and you want to finish off the BF, let me know and I'll get the inventory files for it. The final opponent is a fixed level above you, though, so leveling up isn't necessarily going to help you.

BTW, before you head back to Rivellon, you might want to have your DK unlearn all his skills and have him invest in summing doll upgrades (it is just the hero and summoning dolls in the after-game BF). I put about half his points into level upgrades and half into skill point transfers, and then upgraded the act 1 skeleton doll, as it was the only one that could use a ranged weapon (crossbow).
