So, what do you prefer? Are all three ways to play equally fun?
So far I played mostly as mage and as warrior and that worked quite well. But what have you played so far?

i can only do in-yer-face warrior or sneaky rogue types that get up and personal to kill.
most likely because if they die at your feet, you don't have to run 20 yards over there, and then 30 yards back there just to loot them.

I played a duel wielding warrior in D2:ED and a ranger in DKS (up to the beginning of FoV). Eventually I plan on starting a warrior in DKS using unarmed combat. What build(s) did/do you use?

You won't have to worry about that. Normal enemies don't drop loot. Only bosses drop loot, and only a few normals drop keys.

Running to the loot is no problem, as mage you have the same "problem". You run fast enough to pick everything up with ease.
Playing a ranger (I'm level 4 now) seems to be very fast and very funny. It feels quite different from the mage. With dodging around and shooting I cleared the first part of the Broken Valley much faster than on the last runs (and with losing not more than 200 health total). I really look forward to continue this experience... tomorrow.;)

Normal enemies can drop loot; I've gotten gold, potions and sometimes equipment from regular opponents.

I never have in 18 hours of play.

They do.
I think Melee and Mage are fun. Ranged sucks though, so no Ranger character for me...

1st character; Battle mage with 2 handed sword. 2nd dual wielding warrior 3rd mostly pure warrior build with 2 handed sword but with a few priest skills (which I hardly used) 4th pure mage build but later battle mage with sword and shield.
I've never done a ranger class because I prefer getting up and close. This is why my pure mage turned into a battle mage, however, in the expansion, I was mostly using spells again and felt like a pure mage once more.
5th? Who knows? I'm planning on going through a nightmare run, so maybe a shield and sword (just to be charmed) priest.

1st Character: dual-wielder, that liked to snipe (w/Explosive Arrows) and summon (when i was able to summon Demons) when possible. 2nd Character: sword-shield fighter, likewise- liked to snipe and summon.

1st I started as a Mage and used mostly spells, but also a bow 2nd I stated as a Warrior, but later on using more a bow ... 3rd I started as a Ranger ... with using magic also ... I love the magic spells and bow, but also the melee damage weapons and a shield In fact, all kind of characters I find fun ... but dual wield I haven't try it yet ... Now I play mostly using a bow and wearing an Armour Set (Defenders of Aleroth Set I found great, but on my current level I search for the parts of the Aleroth Archmage Set ) And I love more and more the Priest skills (Summon Ghost is my favorite!) ...

Dual-wielding or archer. Simple as that, best choice.

I must say that I find the combination of Melee combat with Magic Spells is great Many times I combined : Rush Attack & Firewall + melee combat. But more possebilities are fun and great .

The bow is actually a pretty funny thing to play with. I liked critical hits that to like 8.000 to 10.000 damage and some 2.000 on normal hits. Actually, the ranger is more fun than the pure warrior and a bit less hassle than the mage. What's also good you have to level fewer skills (two are enough) to be good in fights, dodging lets you get around a lot of damage, so you can level "other stuff" you find fun instead of having to pour most of your points into the four of five skills you "need" until the late 20s.

I've played a sword/shield battlemage, and a ranger mage all the way through. The latter was easier at higher levels - Fireball + Explosive arrows are pretty devastating.

It is possible to play with an almsot pure Priest build, even on nightmare difficulty (I read a guide wherein the author has written this is not possible, but I simply can't agree with that!) But to be honest I wish to say that playing a combination of 2 "classes" is almost unbelieveble awesome and very fun to play : On this moment on the highest rank of my all favorite list of builds ... 1 * A Warrior Priest (Wirlpriesly, also female hero - yes I love the female looks, gear, voice, .. Wirlpriesly is following the path - a maked rpg rule myself - of the 2-Handed Weapon Expertise and may only use this kidn of weapon!) 2 * A Ranger Priest (Ronja the Ranger Priest, still waiting till I wake her up again in FoV part - she like trading a lot!) 3 * A Priest (who try to survive, only wearing what he/she can find - forbidden to buy better gear at all, never reload, stay on nightmare mode, ever. She's now my female "Spawwy Priest" - but don't ask me why I choose that name ) Where will these all end ? Even I don't know it ! lol
