hello one and all.

i recently purchased dragon knight saga from steam. although i did have a bad feeling from the demo. As the demo replicated the problem which i am having now.

whenever i start up the game, the audio is fine. movies load. menu music. all good. the moment i jump into the character creation screen, the game becomes mute. and the next scene is a movie again. no problems. but once i'm in the game, playing, it is totally mute and no sound can be heard AT ALL even when i exit to the game menu.

i have updated all drivers and whatnot directx, c++, ac3 filter, amd support, nvidia phyisX. i ran the support tool. it told me i failed the cpu test.
which means i did not meet 1.8ghz.
i verified game cache no problems.

i'm running on

I7-720QM
ati mobility radeon HD5730 1 gig
4 gig ram
OS : win7 x64

i'm running smooth with not much lag even though i failed the cpu test. furthermore, i don't think a gpu will affect sound.

i'm got really excited for this game.. now i'm really disappointed.. any help is greatly appreciated. thank you.

There is a single core optimization option you can check off, which might help with the performance, at least.


Did you try saving and reloading, possibly exiting and restarting the game in between?

A couple people reported a similar sound problem in the topic No Sound/Music.


You can try emailing support@larian.com, with a description of the problem and maybe a link to this topic (DKS support page). Unfortunately, though, they are on vacation until the end of the month.

ah. thanks for that advice.

after reading the topic, i proceeded to try the method of saving and reloading. i've just finished the starting area and am now at broken valley.

the method initially worked. but after the movie of the ship(?) flying through the air and landing at broken valley, the sound problem came back once again. i hope it doesn't persist. it really affects the environment of the game. although once again saving and restarting the game solves it.

i've emailed them... aw. what a pity. i guess i'll have to wait.

hello one and all again, i would like to post an update on my problem.

my hard disk crashed last friday. i swapped a new one out and put a new one in and did a clean boot of windows. right now, without any codecs... not even vlc, i just redownloaded dks into my computer.

and guess what, the audio works fine. all the fmvs and speeches work flawlessly now (i think. i played it for 5 mins and this was what i got)

so.. problem solved? lol. oh well. i'll update if anything else again.

yeah that's too bad my hard drive started to have bad sectors. so.. yeah.

i guess that's a new beginning. LOL.

Are you having the same problem as Wingblood had?

I don't know if it would help with this issue, but the K-Lite Codec Pack comes with a 'codec tweak tool' which can repair codecs and disable filters, which a couple people have mentioned using to fix problems (like here). This tool is also available separately (I've never tried it).

A search of the forum or Google may turn up other suggestions, depending on what the problem is...

I was facing the same problem since I am new to this.But after going through this thread my problem was solved. You guys are very helpful.
