In order to increase my chances of getting a solution for the problem, I also posted in this section, even though I´m not too good with english.

I´ve played Beyond Divinity for a while with administrative rights and in compatibility mode for Win98. For some reason, I can´t start the game anymore. Either I get the message "Error opening TGA Image" or "unable to read configuration file - exiting".

I browsed the internet for a solution and found some comments about a config.div-file, which might be associated to videoplayers and can no longer be opened properly. I can´t say, if that´s the reason for the problems, but the file config.div is associated with "Divx Plus Player".
A reinstall didn´t help and I´m out of options. Does someone have an idea about how to make this game playable again?

Here are some informations about my PC:
AMD 790GX Hexacore
8 GB Ram
Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit
ATI Radeon 4850

P.S.: I´m using the german version 1.47 from Gold Games 9.

The game shouldn't care if Windows has .div files associated with a program or not.

When you reinstalled the game, did you make sure all files were gone after you uninstalled, except for the saved game folders?

Are you shutting down all non-essential programs (especially anti-virus) before starting the game?

In Windows Explorer, if you browse to the '..\Beyond Divinity\Static' folder, can you open the tga files there in an image viewer (such as IrfanView)?

You can try deleting the files config.div, slashed.cfg and slashed-d3d6.cfg in the Beyond Divinity folder (if they exist), to force the configuration program to recreate them, but reinstalling the game should have done that already.

The targa-files are associated with the QuickTime PictureViewer, which can open them properly. They can also be opened with XnView or some other image viewers I have installed.

When I try starting the game, the configuration menu pops up. If I select "apply and close", not much happens. I just get the message, that Divinity wasn´t shot down properly the last time and that I can reset the configurations. When I accept, I get the message "unable to read configuration file - exiting".
Choosing the option Test in the configurations only ends up in a black screen and again, nothing happens. When I press the windows button to return to desktop, I get the message about the TGA-Image.

I tried deinstalling the game, used a file deleter and registry optimizer to clean up everything and manually deleted the remaining three files (which remained in a hidden folder from Divine Divinity - I deleted them, anyway). But after reinstalling the game, it´s still not playable.

The configuration program's test can have a problem with some video card and driver combinations, resulting in a black screen, but the game itself should be fine if you check the 'skip test' box.

A couple people had problems with the game creating the configuration files, but if they already existed the game would load fine. I previously gave a download link for my files, but I don't know if they would help with the German version of the game. If you have access to another computer you could try installing it there, start it, exit and copy the configuration files to your computer.

In Windows Explorer, if you browse to the '..\Beyond Divinity\Static' folder, you can rename the 'intro.mpg' video. This will prevent the intro video from being played each time the game is started, and has helped with crash problems that were related to switching resolutions.

If you have not done so already, you could try emailing support@larian.com, with a description of the problem and maybe a link to this topic.

I tried out the files you´ve uploaded, but they ended messing up with the video drivers or the card itself pretty badly. First I got some screen display errors and then it fade to black (literally). Maybe I´ll try installing it on another pc and copying the files from there, if there´s one accessible some day.

As for emailing them: I don´t think that Larian still offers support or cares about problems with a game as old as Beyond Divinity. However... I´ll just uninstall the game and let it be. It was a lousy game in the first place. Nothing compared to Divine Divinity.

Anyway, thank you for your help and the fast replies.

Did you check the resolution in the config.div file? An unsupported resolution is the only thing I can think of that would cause any display errors... or maybe a setting or option for DirectX in one of the 'slashed' files. Other than that, even if the files are incompatible it should only be an issue with the game itself.
