DKS is a great game, but is anyone else slightly disappointed that you can't ever, in any situation, fight humanoid enemies in dragon form?

As soon as you morph into dragon, all the humanoid targets fade out of existence.

I realize that from a gameplay standpoint, it might make significant parts of the game entirely too easy if you just went around burning all the humanoids enemies on the ground - especially since you get mega-mana regen, high resists, and lots of HP. . . but then, that's kind of the point of being a dragon knight, is it not?

Clever level design could have had plenty of areas where you are forced to take human form (because they are inside/underground, or in those anti-dragon force-field spheres, but still allowed a number of encounters where you could be the Burninator (ok, well, with my Fireballs, I'm already the Burninator - funny thing: on my current char, the fireball spells as a human do more damage than the dragon fire spheres, though the firebreath, on a target that can't move real fast, can do a lot of dmg quickly).

I particularly thought it would have been awesome to attack Barnabus, on his platform, after I finished disabling his forcefields, in dragon form.

Yeah, a lot of people mentioned this in the past. Being able to attack ground enemies in dragon form was originally in the game but was removed due to technical problems with the game engine. Think it was because (on the xbox version) it made the game run too slowly.

Others say it would have made the game too easy but there were workarounds to balance out the gameplay. But, yes it was a major disapointment.

For me it wasn't a disappointment at all . It would give an extra dimention, yes, but for me no need/wish to burn enemies that way.

IMO there's not much problem about the balance since that sort of gameplay has already been explored. I think Drakan allowed that type of gameplay but I don't remember it being too easy.

Yeah, drakan allowed you to walk around as a dragon on the ground and attack ground troups. It didn't make the game too easy as Arokh the dragon was quite easy to kill. 3 or 4 hits from a lowly orc and he was dead. They balanced it out by having human only areas. It actually seemed more realistic; as powerful as a dragon is, 4 hits in the neck / chest with a war axe wouldn't do the dragon (of Arokh's size) any good at all. He does not wear armour and have hard scales on his underside.

Divinity 2 didn't have the ability to attack ground troups due to technical issues but Larian said they planned to / originally had it in the game.

Yeah, I kind of wondered if technical limitations might have been part of the reasoning. As I played the game, I couldn't help shake the feeling that the developers had originally intended you to do more as a Dragon.

But, mainly, it kind of seems out-of-story to have the player character become a dragon, and then never fight any enemies (except a few flying demons and Svadilfari) as a dragon. Other than transport, it would seem the player being a dragon only serves to explain why you are able to attain such high levels of character development, but your actual power is whatever magic or fighting skills you employ in human form, mostly (although, I have to confess that when fighting in some areas, especially the Flying Fortresses, I will sometimes morph to dragon form to either get away from enemies if I'm close to death, or simply to regenerate my magic and to heal using the Dragon Spirit skill; that definitely makes you a lot more dangerous to the Black Ring).

Maybe this new Dragon Commander strategy game they're cooking up will allow more ability to engage ground targets as a dragon.
