I have encountered Lord Lovis at the Citadel and he gave me the Maxos Temple Key and the Paper Trail quest. I have reached Maxos temple (near ZixZax), defeated the Dragon Slayers and approached the entrance but it says that the door cannot be opened by lockpick. I can see the Maxos Temple Key under my inventory quest items.

Please help!

P.S. I am running version 1.3.13.100 on Windows 7 from the Retail DVD and I have unlocked the achievement "Hold the Key".

You defeated all three of the dragon slayers after Rhode left? A couple people tried sneaking around them, but even with the key the door can not be opened until they are dealt with.

Do you have a recent save you can reload and retry that section?

Are you outside at the main door, or inside after talking to Zandalor? It sounds like the former (entering completes the Paper Trail quest), but a few people have gotten stuck at the later. The inside door can not be opened with a key; read the book on the pedestal for a clue, or simple search the room.
There are 4 vases in the room, one of which can be selected and used like a lever to open the door.

If you are outside with the dragon slayers all dead, you may have hit a bug/glitch. If you have anything left to do in Broken Valley you can go finish it now and return to the temple later. Entering the fjords (from the path to the far south west in Broken Valley) and returning may help if the problem is just a glitch with the game recognizing the slayers are dead (ie forcing the game to reload the area may get the key/quest working).

Try emailing support@larian.com, with a description of the problem and maybe a link to this topic.

I am outside at the main door. Last night after watching a youtube video of someone entering the temple, I noticed when they reached the door it said something like "door locked. open (e) key." My game says something like "door locked. open (e) lockpick.", but I have verified that I possess the key. I tried placing the key in different squares in my inventory but that did not work.

Regarding the three slayers. I defeated them all--well I think. It was a difficult combat for me and each slayer took a lot of time to defeat and I could only account for killing two of them. When I looked for the third, he could not be found, but I had a creature with me and I figured he killed the third. I could never verify this. It is possible he 'slipped' through a crack in the floor or something.

Your advice gives me new hope. I will first try going to the fjords and if that doesn't work I will try to reload, but that unfortunately would mean that I would loose a few levels and have to reconquer half of the Broken Valley again.

I traveled to the fjords and came back to Broken Valley. As I approached the great walkway leading up to the temple I thought about that third slayer whom I was never certain was killed or not. Amazingly I recalled the area where I thought I last saw him while I was in hectic mortal combat with the other two slayers and I traveled to that area which happened to be the lower ramp to the left of the main walkway leading to the temple. Suddenly the slayer just appeared right in front of me and began casting spells on himself then lunged into me with his sword. I took him down in a few quick strokes and heard Talana talking to me. I approached the temple door and the text changed from lockpicking to key. I happily entered the temple and passed through the Zandalor cutscene without difficulty.

Thanks Raze. It was your thought process that lead me to the answer. thankyou

Glad you got it. party

I saved at least every time I levelled, and usually before entering new areas (caves, buildings, etc), before turning in quests or expected encounters (to allow for reloads to try different dialog options, etc), after tough fights or finding good loot, etc.

BTW, when you finish off Maxos Temple (if you haven't already) you will get access to Sentinel Island. Your first encounter there you can mindread to go up a level, so the higher level you are (I made it to level 18 in the fjords) the more of an experience bonus that will be. You don't need to get to a high level, but it would be better if you got to a new level before entering, to get a full level bonus (equip anything you have with a Wisdom bonus).
