I am playing a bow user and I am wondering if a melee damage charm would benefit a range bow user? I do not fight up close ... range only so ... my guess is that melee charm affects bow range users and up close fighters not magic users. is my thoughts correct?

thankyou

An Increased Damage enchantment will do either melee or ranged damage depending on the weapon type, but a melee damage charm will only help with a melee weapon (see the charm's description in the inventory). I think I saved the game and tested that at some point (attacking the same strong opponent with the same bow with and without a charm added, to see if there was a significant difference in the average damage per hit), or at least thought about doing so.
I didn't use any charms with my warrior in D2:ED or ranger in DKS.

so just to be completely clear a damage enchantement for a ranged weapon enhancements would have to save + ranged weapon damage. so is this kind of charm good for both bow user and mage then?

thankyou

There are no charms for ranged damage. The melee damage charm only works in melee weapons. I assume, but have not tested, that a magic damage charm would add to the magic damage done by bows or melee weapons.

I mentioned enchantments because the Increased Damage enchantment does not specify the type of damage done (other than being conventional weapon damage). If it is added to a melee weapon it does melee damage, and if added to a bow does ranged damage. The melee damage charm, however, specifically mentions melee damage/weapons in its name and description.

An Increased Magical Damage enchantment would should be the first choice for mages or intelligence based warriors, while rangers or strength based warriors should pick Increased Damage first. As a warrior/ranger I always used Increased Damage first and Increased Magical Damage second. There isn't really an obvious third choice for weapons with 3 enchantment slots; I went with Poison for my warrior and Butcher for my ranger.

I never see a Magic Damage Charm smirk ... only Increased Magic Damage via Enchantments .

Why not Fire Curse, Life Leech or Mana Leech as third choice on a weapon ? wink

Well, I guess that explains why I never tested such a charm. biggrin

I remembered there were no ranged damage charms, but (not actually using any charms) didn't really pay too much attention to the 'lesser' types (I did purchase some charms, primarily strength and dexterity, for possible use later in the game, but never needed them). I must have been thinking of the magic damage bonuses on equipment, and assumed there was a corresponding charm.

In D2:ED I tried Fire Curse once, but it didn't seem to be triggered as much as Poison (though the effect may just not have been as noticeable; I never checked the combat log to see if it was being triggered or resisted). I didn't bother putting more than 1 point into the Life/Mana Leech skills, so didn't see much use for the corresponding enchantments (potions were more than adequate for healing and I rarely required that much mana that I couldn't just wait or use a potion for).

hahaha Indeed ...

The most interesting thing about Life Leech or Mana Leech via Enchantments is that I can try them out with my Priest build (she uses many MP !) without investing skill points in the skill like Life Leech ...
