Erm. I am currently in the catacombs, I believe the second or third level down. I am opening the four tombstones to open the two inner ones. I was just wondering how long is your gaurdian supposed to last you, because he died on me. I opened the one with the ghoul, and the skeletal warrior (it carries an axe). I stayed away from opening the one where a crazy skeleton comes out that ressurects other skeletons. I killed two before, but my gaurdian was w/ me, and I was a bit intimidated moving to this one. Also, I picked the spell "Freeze" under way of the mage so I can freeze some of the more intense monsters, yet, nothing happens to them! I tried freezing even the simple skeletons, and they do not freeze. They don't even recieve any damage. Well, just wondering why none of the enemies are freezing, and how long that gaurdian of yours is supposed to last. This game is an absolute blast. Pretty difficult though. Also, how do you identify an item? I am a little lost on that, I have a few axe's that need to be identified to see if it is "Slasher." Yeah, pretty much it, brutal game, I've only invested points in constitution and intelligence, my 10 str is preventing me from using some stuff, but, ehh... Whats the most important category to invest points into for a mage? I wasn't even bothering with the ummm... Strength and Agility. Well, someone hit me up w/ some advice. It'd be appreciated =:Ţ.

Hello RPGame
1- freeze doesn't work on certain monsters if your freeze level is too low. 2- if you are too week to kill all the monsters, kill most of them and use the shadow potion to escape. Open the 4 tombs, and then run to the 2 other ones. You can just open one of them. 3- To identifie an item you have the skill "identify". Some merchant can identify or repair your stuff.

a little more into detail on how to identify... you can use the identify skill, meaning you would need one skill level in the identify skill to identify a level 1 item, skill level 2 for a level 2 item, and so on and so forth...
or you can go to the shop and click on the magnifying glass icon near the top right of the barter window... then just scroll down to the item you want identified (the value of the item will be in a blue colour, rather than the standard grayish colour). just click the item and the dude will tell you how much it costs to identify.
hope that answers your question on identifying...

Hey thanks for the tips, but what does a shadow potion exactly do? n' how long did that like zombie gaurdian last you guys? Is it better to just learn the ID skills, or to just go to a merch?

for the first little while in the game i'd recommend going to the merchant to get it done, as you'll need every skill point you can get for more useful things, depending on your class and how you want to build up.
as for the potion question, i dunno... i think it depends on the bottle size and all... i dont think i've ever used a shadow potion in the game 'cause when i used to try it would always freeze. so i just got used to not using it lol.

Since I (role)play a warrior, I do not use the cowardly thieve's Shadow Potion ... Actually, a shadow's potion is useful, although the Minor potion works only for a few seconds...

As far as i read, i havent seen the anwser to the question of the life of the zombie. Well here it is: he lives until he is killed or until you go back to the surface.

if i understood it correctly, you're playing as a mage and this is your first char in dd. it might be a bit difficult for a mage;why don't you play a warrior instead? imo its the best class for beginners. warriors have the most hit pts and damage per constitution and str pt. even then, a warrior will still find it difficult to go toe-to-toe with those damn skeletal guardians, as i found out too dearly with my first character. so i asked around in this forum and i found that their levels are much higher. you can deal with them much easier if you use a bow: run and gun, run and gun. even without a pt in bow expertise you'll get past those tough monsters. just be patient. it's really difficult initially, especially when don't have good gear and don't have a lot of hit points. when you get to rivertown market, you'll find better gear and hopefully, things will start to be a bit easier. now i'm making my 4th char and those skeletal guardians, skeleton lords, skeletal conjurer lords in the catacombs are not much of a problem as before. they're still tough when you melee, even in easy mode, but beatable. just takes a little getting used to the monsters' levels and their capabilities.
on freeze, if you read the skill description carefully, only monsters up to a certain resistance can be frozen per level of freeze. so if their resistance is higher than the level of freeze skill you have, then they won't be frozen. however, when you get out of aleroth and face the orcs, you'll find that freeze will be very helpful, especially against those annoying war drummers. dispose of them firstly and quickly.
for good weapons and armor, what i do is save as much gold as i can. i even keep slasher so i can sell it later if i find a good item which costs a lot. if i can't find good gear in rivertown market, i head to the dark forest. gavanariel, the elven merchant there, sells excellent gear, especially bows and armor, aside from death blades, daggers, axes, etc. save your game before talking to him then just re-load and re-load until you get the item/s you want.
on the zombie guardian gregar brock, i usually save him until i get to the last level of the catacombs. things can get a bit hairy there. hopefully, you would have found scorpion trap to help you, too.

I gave my warrior "Metheor Strike" at the beginning, and things went easier. A mage should have less problems in DD, as far as I noticed.

Well gregar died on me in the four tomb areas. Thanks for the advice though. I didn't want to pick a warrior, just because a sorceress was my favorite character in Diablo II, and I don't know, I just think wizardy is more fun. Hand to hand melee combat for me sometimes gets a little boring.

Hello RPGame
I understand that you prefer to be a wizard. But I would like to know if you could reach the next level of the catacombs and if you could identify slasher ?

Just one little remark though: make sure your wizard can fight with weapons too, because in certain places in the game you CANT use magic at all.
