Hi there,

I only got this game recently and was really enjoying it, but I have run into a problem that has me stuck. For some reason I can't comprehend, the game seems to start up fine and the load bar/sword thing goes completely red, and that's where it stops. No menu, nothing happens, I'm just stuck at the title screen. There's no music either.

In my task manager it says that the game is not responding, although whether that's what's going on with the game or just what happens when I tab out of it I can't tell.

I've tried restarting the computer, reinstalling DD, running with different settings, running in a different compatibility mode and running as administrator. None has yielded results.

I also get the configuration reset pop up every time I run the game, obviously because I can't shut it down properly and have to ctrl-alt-delete to get out once it is frozen.

I'm running Windows 7 with 4 gigs of RAM and an nvidia graphics card. The game just started doing this a few hours ago, and I haven't downloaded anything new or changed any settings today. It was working perfectly a little while ago--what gives?

Thanks for any help.

Did you try just leaving it for awhile, to see if the loading process was just longer than normal?

Is your anti-virus program, or something, set to automatically update in the background? That could cause a conflict even if you didn't manually install or change anything.

Are you shutting down all non-essential programs before starting the game?

When you uninstalled the game, did you make sure there was nothing left in the Divine Divinity folder, other than possibly the savegames folder, before rebooting and reinstalling?
Each save is a separate subfolder in the '..\Divine Divinity\savegames' folder.
Under Vista/7, depending on how the user accounts are set up, if you install the game to the default Program Files path, Windows can create separate savegame folders for each user, and then map that folder to the game's savegame folder (so it will just see the saves for the relevant user).
C:\Users\ %account name% \AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Divine Divinity\savegames

If you installed to the default Program Files path, you could try re-installing it elsewhere (like in c:\games\ or something).

I got into the same situation just yesterday. Doesn't load entirely. Not any music heard. Closes ONLY by Ctrl+Alt+Del. Same OS, same RAM size, AMD GPU. Not a problem until now. I hope it will be solved. Level 23 hero.

Did you try reinstalling the game, or for the Steam version verifying local files, etc?

Firstly, many thanks for the instant response. Secondly, I got the game from GOG.com. I just unistalled and reinstalled it and now the div.exe is a 0 byte archive which doesn't launch and it returned the "failed to launch Divine Divinity: 193" error. Do I need to redownload the setup from GOG.com. It is supposed to check integrity before installation as it says during the operation.

You shouldn't need to redownload the setup file. Normally I'd suggest rebooting, shutting down all non-essential programs (such as anti-virus) and reinstalling the game again. However, there is an update for the GOG version (and the anthology / DVD version) that hasn't gotten an official patch yet (music fix), which would replace the div.exe file anyway.

Of course if the div.exe was corrupted during/after installation, it is possible other files were, as well, so if the music fix doesn't get the game working I'd try another clean install.

If you want to check that the setup file is ok, the GOG Community Wiki lists the md5 checksum values for many games there (the md5 value for setup_divine_divinity_1.0.2.13.exe is d9cfa77cb5f2da6be9c6c2a7a90da653. You can use a program like Hash to create an md5 value for the file you downloaded, and check it against the expected value.

File: setup_divine_divinity_1.0.2.13.exe
Size: 1970463719 bytes

MD5: D9CFA77CB5F2DA6BE9C6C2A7A90DA653
SHA1: E416BB5822838DD1FF9931D9039EC9BF78149670
CRC32: 44443E0F

If you continue to have file corruption problems with DD, or have had problems with other resource intensive programs (burning DVD-Rs, etc), you may want to check your system RAM, or run ScanDisk on your hard drive (right click on the hard drive in Windows Explorer, select Properties, switch to the Tools tab, and hit the Check Now button in the Error Checking Status section).

Thanks again! I found out that the div.exe archive was corrupted and I deleted so as to be created again from the setup archive. All went well except from my last save which couldn't load. I loaded the 2nd to last and OK.

Very nice of you! Be well my friend!

And my appreciation to Larian team for making such a wonderful game so long ago. I hope Divinity Sin will be as good as everyone believes it can become.
