Just wondering if they made any major changes, particularly around balancing with combat and stuff.

I haven't played the game before, I just started but was looking around at some threads for tips for character builds which are obviously mostly pre-developers cut. I've seen some provide their current stats. My character is starting with way higher stats than the ones I saw.

i.e.

Vitality 37
Spirit 25
Strength 39
Dexterity 21
Intelligence 31

Is this a result of re-balancing, or was I reading those threads wrong?

I'm afraid after the ritual those stats will all go to 1!

There were balance changes made that affect the later stuff in Ego Draconis I think. One example I can think of is in the original version a fight with a demon in Dragon form was really easy and now it's really difficult. However in other parts it was made easier and I think allows you to level up faster than the original. Nightmare difficulty was added too. Old build guides will mostly still be okay anyway.

There were balancing changes, etc, made between the original release of Ego Draconis and DKS, but not between DKS and the Developer's Cut.

Haha thanks. I hadn't got to that part because I was having an issue with the game freezing at the part where I enter Farglow. Ended up lowering the graphics and it let me past that part for some reason.

In any case I'm going to be an unarmed fighter with some magic use. Have also upped difficulty to nightmare. I'm guessing this will make things rather challenging?

Initially nightmare is tricky as you don't have many skills available or decent items but as it goes on I don't think the game is too difficult really. I've never used a helmet in it for example. Though I have never tried as unarmed fighter either, once you start getting some of the higher tier skills it shouldn't be too hard except for the odd boss. I found as a ranger it wasn't too challenging after the early game anyway.

I currently have it running on a relatively low-end machine (AMD E450 sub-notebook) and once I turned all the shadows and dynamic lighting stuff off or on low it runs really smoothly even with high quality textures so I'm very happy with that. I think I read other people saying that the shadows can cause some freezing and frame skipping so it's possible that's what happened you but odd if it only happens at the very beginning.

The character freezing as you approach the gate to farglow is a known issue (though uncommon). Another person reported lowering the graphics options to get past there, and was then able to save and raise the graphics options back to where they were. It can help to head directly to the gate from the start of the game, and not delay or leave the path to kill rabits, etc. Usually, though, you should be able to quicksave if your character gets stuck there, then quickload and continue.

Unarmed combat should indeed be challenging at the start of the game. In DKS I played a ranger (on nightmare) that used some unarmed combat at the beginning of the game, but after a few levels I learned a couple skills and adjusted my tactics so that I rarely needed to fall back to melee combat. I'm actually planning on starting an unarmed warrior in D2:DC someday. In DKS I stopped distributing stat points after level 15, but I suspect that will not be possible with an unarmed warrior (strength being a significant factor in damage, since no weapons means no associated damage, bonuses or damage enhancing enchantments).

I just did a run with an unarmed character recently, and it does start out really painfully. The amount of damage you do is in large part based on your level. Increasing your level will up your damage, even if your strength stays the same.

Here's the progression for a character with 4 Strength for levels 1-5.

  • Level 1 base Unarmed damage: 1-1
  • Level 2 base Unarmed damage: 2-2
  • Level 3 base Unarmed damage: 3-3
  • Level 4 base Unarmed damage: 4-5
  • Level 5 base Unarmed damage: 5-6

Just going from level 1 to 3 makes a huge difference to your effectiveness in combat.

I restarted about 10 times, and nothing worked, whether I went straight there or not. I did try saving in the part I was stuck and loading but didnt work. Only thing that worked was lowering all the graphical settings. I have turned them right back up and it works fine so far. I have a pretty good computer too, i7 cpu, 6gb ram and gtx560ti card, so I wouldn't expect that had anything to do with it.

Ive always liked unarmed combat and magic. Unarmed seems more interesting to me than using weapons. Unfortunately unarmed is either not well developed or not used at all in most rpg's

Have to say I'm getting my ass handed to me, can barely take on more than 1 or 2 goblins in the broken valley village area. It's all hit and run tactics.

Difficulty with groups of opponents is to be expected for the first couple levels. You can do some quests in the village, or loot / trade to maybe get some better equipment.
