I preordered Dragon Commander on Larianvault. Now i have seen a few articles that say about a special edition (http://www.destructoid.com/gamescom-dragon-commander-se-will-include-board-game-233437.phtml), and i really want a boxed/physical copy of this game. Has there been any confirmation of a special edition or boxed copy and if so where could i order one? Also, is there a way to cancel my preorder on Larainvault?

I think holding off on the special board-game edition until there's enough additional content for the videogame is a good idea. It wasn't ready in time to be offered for the Kickstarter campaign, and if it only had the same game content, people might have held off on getting DC through the Kickstarter.

Dragon Commander retail boxes to come with free digital backup on GOG.com!
We're delighted to announce that each and every retail box of Divinity: Dragon Commander will now come with a free digital backup on GOG.com. That way, even if you don't have your DVD readily available, you'll still be able to play wherever you are!

Does anyone know where these retail boxes are going to be sold? I would much rather get one of these than a digital version.

If there is eventually a retail special edition version, there will most likely be some sold through the Larian Vault, and then in whatever territories Larian can find distributors for.

The Larian Vault is offering a free upgrade to the Imperial Edition of Dragon Commander for those who pre-order. Does pledging for a Dragon Commander-receiving tier on Kickstarter count as pre-ordering Dragon Commander?

Not a big fan of pre-orders bonuses, it reminds me too much of day-one DLCs some studios love so much, but this Earth map looks funny. Well, if there is no physical version yet, I guess I'll have to go for the digital, even if I would've prefered the good'ol box... So, is the 'Imperial edition' only for Vault pre-orders, or for all (eg. the Gamersgate one, which is 5€ less)? Though, I think I'll take it on the Vault anyway. More money to Larian, less to who-knows-who.

Btw, I must say I'm quite surprised by how much Larian promote the GoG version instead of the Vault's. I guess it has more visibility.

Hmm, I can't find the twitter post saying there will be no limited edition anymore. Is this really true?

I believe that the "Imperial Edition" is the "collectors edition" equivalent for this game.

Yes, it is true. There is still going to be a retail release, but not the special edition (at least not in the near term).
The process for actually getting the board game produced was taking too long and the pieces proved too expensive; Swen said during Tuesday's Dragon Commander twitch.tv match (starting from 1:29:50) that they could have bought a 3D printer for the cost of the prototype pieces they had made. If there is enough additional content for the game to eventually justify a re-release, then the special edition may still happen, someday.

Well if I quote their website (http://www.divinitydragoncommander.com/blog.php?news=41):

The Imperial Edition is a special collector’s edition of Divinity: Dragon Commander and is free for everyone who preorder(ed) the game(*)

The Imperial Edition is a special collector’s edition of Divinity: Dragon Commander and includes:

A unique development documentary video
An extra campaign map that has dragons fight for control of the Earth
A golden skin for your Dragon Emperor
A beautifully remastered version of the soundtrack by Kirill Pokrovsky
Dragon Commander’s best kept secret: an overview of all the choices and consequences in the game (you’ll be amazed)
Immediate beta access(**)
The Imperial Edition will be made available on the day of release as downloadable content, and people who preorder will receive a download key. Anybody who pre-purchases will also receive a Steam key that will unlock beta access.

The Imperial Edition will remain available after release, but will then be sold as a separate DLC.

The question was not about 'a' collector's edition, though, it was about a specific retail collector's edition, with a board game included, which Larian mentioned they were trying to do a year ago (see here, for example), long before the Imperial Edition was announced.

Yep, my question was about the retail edition with the board game. Shame it's not going to be made. It was one of the best ideas for a collector's edition, I think.

Thanks for the answers.

Edit: Hey, they could Kickstart the board game if Dragon Commander proves successful. smile Board games tend to do quite well on Kickstarter.

My suggestion for Larian about possibly kickstarting a DC boardgame was that they should only do it if they have extra content for the computer game to go along with it. If they can attach an expansion pack in there, that will lure in those who will want the expansion but maybe not the board game.

I'm a bit wary about the thought of kickstarting it, especially if an expansion is connected to it. I think people will see it as greed, I'd love to have a DC boardgame though
