Why is buying from GoG so incredibly cheaper?

Doesn't Larian get 100% of the money when buying from the Vault?

So if I buy from GoG, Larian only receives $27, yet they are selling the game for $51 at the Vault - makes no sense! They could price the game at 25€ on the Vault and still make more money than from GoG/Steam.

51$? It is 39.99$ on the Vault. Also, there are agreements in place that make it so that we cannot just set it to any price we like.

I was comparing the EU prices (39 euro = $51).

I understand if there are agreements preventing you from keeping the US and EU prices the same, but if GoG is somehow exempt from those agreements they are effectively undercutting you by 30%.

That makes purchasing from them a no-brainer for those of us living in the EU.

ForkTong was referring to the fact that in the US the price in the Vault gets converted to $39.99 (in Canada it stays in € so is currently about $54, so there is the same incentive to get the download version from GOG as in the EU). For the agreements with various distributors, they need to match the price points in those territories, even if GOG has a single price worldwide.

No, it's a general issue. Prices on GOG are the same in each country worldwide. Prices on Steam differ from country to country.

I guess Larian made a deal with Steam so they can't offer a worldwide single price like on GOG. wink

There are also retail distributors in the EU, which could possibly be less likely to want to distribute the game if it was going to be sold directly at a lower price.

We're unfortunately also not as tax optimised as GOG or Steam. Want it or not, we're paying 21% VAT on each transaction on the Vault, regardless of where the sale happens.

Well, at least you're proud on your country and support it with your taxes, I like that.

I love GOG.com but I have to admit that they are of course tax-evasive, being registered on Cyprus.... smirk

It was the fact that Larian Vault was in Euro that I bought it there rather than GOG, I'm not fond of conducting transactions in US Dollars. It was that balanced against the fact the Vault provided steam keys and a beta available only on steam, yup I really dislike steam to the point that being given keys that I'm free to ignore counts as a negative.

As to actually paying your taxes shame on you, should you not be a near bankrupt subsidiary of another subsidiary in some kind of crazy infinite legal process that really means you don't exist and can get away with murder or at least profiting from aiding drug cartels and terrorists.

If the VAT stays the same...why don't you keep prices constant across regions? Is Steam/retailers forcing you to charge more in Europe/less in the US?

But anyway, if you're not paying VAT on GoG sales I guess there's not that big a difference for you profit-wise whether people buy the game there or from the Vault.

To be honest I like the concept of taxes just not the implementation (govt seem to waste a lot of money). I'm all for education and health-care - and for the most part I consider the military a necessary evil (though I was rather unhappy with our pre-emptive invasion of a country). Still I just assume set the salary of those in the senate and house of representative to match that of the average american - approx $42,000 - and call it a day - besides we could use the savings from their salary to let the military buy a few more of those $50,000 toilets they graciously approved.

I realize this is very much off topic but since you mentioned it....

I don't mind paying the extra on the vault for the game. I know that the money is going straight to Larian and not through GoG or Steam as a filter even if I use the Steam code that I get.

Question: If I buy through the vault, can I link it to my steam account?

Thanks!

Yes, buying it from the Vault gets you a Steam code.

Taken from the Vault page:

- Comes as a DRM free download and with a Steam key.

So if they're giving out Steam Keys, are they still making more money off of a sale through the Vault than through Steam?

And if that's the case, why is there an option (for kickstarter backers) to select a copy of Original Sin through the Vault OR Steam?
