EDIT: The retail version is a Steam install, and there is a GOG code for a DRM free version.

No. It comes with a GOG key (as a digital backup) and a Steam key (only required if you want to use the Steamworks lobby/leaderboard). You do not need either key.

The retail version does not need to be activated, but there will be a patch to include updates made after it went gold.

Why do you have to install steam to use the retail version?

I do not have the retail version myself but as far as I know you can just insert the DVD into your drive and install the game from it. It is DRM free and does not have to be activated via Steam.

Yes, the game comes with GOG key and the steam key - GOG is like digital backup and steam key is needed only if you want to use steam related content like achievements etc. But if you do not want to use them - then you can just play the game as it is installed from DVD and do not have to install steam.

Hm, that is weird. Can't you just browse the DVD and try to install the game manually using the .exe file? Or does the steam installer also pop up if you click on the .exe file?

As far as i see there is only a steam Installer on the DVD maybe i try the second DVD.

Edit: No nothing on DVD 2 either! That is really annoying! mad Can sombody say how it is with the GOG version? Can i install it without installing Steam?

The GOG version will be a standalone installer - no need for Steam.

I'm very sorry for the miss-information.

The news for the English retail release says "Comes with free Imperial Edition upgrade, a Steam AND Gog.com key for the same price as regular digital edition.", which to me really sounds like there are 2 keys in addition to the DVD version, not that the DVD version is Steam and there is a code for the DRM free version from GOG. I have not seen it explicitly stated anywhere that the retail version is Steam, and as far as I have seen everyone else made the same assumption that I did.
