Does the AI cheat and get bonuses on higher difficulties or does it get smarter? If it does cheat, which difficulty is the fairest (smartest AI with least bonuses)?

Hard is HHHHHHAAAAAAAARRRRRDDDDD.

I had 140+ hours in the beta, so I first did the campaign on Normal. It took me 46 turns and I won the campaign with 82 wins and 6 losses, and I didn't get my first loss until Chapter 2, and my second until Chapter 3. I'm on Turn 12 and my record is 6-3.

The enemy in Chapter 1 may be limited in terms of unit types, so they’re spending those research points to buff their troops, and that is scary-effective. They are using their abilities and being very aggressive. Masses of troopers converting or attacking my points, and going Kamikazi, Warlocks loaking and polymorphing.

I finished Chapter 1 in 8 turns on Normal, and I’m on Turn 12 on Hard and the enemy still holds half the map.

Yes, but is it hard because it's cheating or is it actually playing smarter than Normal? Would be nice to know if there are different AI routines for Hard/Insane or just more bonuses.

It seems to be playing smarter. It uses abilities well, flanks and is overall tough to beat.

That sounds good. Would be nice if a dev could clarify exactly what the difficulty setting does!
