So in the news thread lars said....
We've noticed there's some confusion about the Steam version of the game versus the other versions like the one that'll be distributed through gog.com or the vault.
The short of it is that all versions all equal and all versions are compatible with one another.
Which means what exactly?
I purchased my copy of D.Commander through the vault, directly from the company as there are less things that can be screwed up if the third party is phased out. But if I understand correctly that means Larian Studios did NOT program in a mutiplayer hub OR that I cannot access the 1.040 patch?
Or is there a way to tap Steam metaphorically on the shoulder and inform it, 'Look, I DO have Dragon Commander!"
To which it replies, "By jove, so you do! Jolly good, have we some more options for you!"
And it will smile at me while I smile at it, neither one voicing our own personal thoughts at the others immolation.
So, what is it? Will the 1.040 patch be available to us non-steam purchasers of Dragon Commander? Do we need it? (I've been having a few issues with D.Com due to the duel core problems)
INFORM ME, OH MODERATORS!!
no moderator here but there you go:
patches are available to all versions, even if they roll out the updates at different times. atm the order is steam->vault->gog as far as i know.
btw you can download the vault patch and apply it to gog versions for example.
if you need it or not could possibly be solved by reading the changelog:
http://www.larian.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=473164&gonew=1#topmultiplayer part is exclusive to steam.
there was already a discussion about this and the misleading statements from Larian regarding that. (for example here:
http://www.larian.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=471558#Post471558 )
fact of the matter is that you need to use your steam key or buy it from steam directly or your screwed.
the other versions have theoretically "directIPconnect" available to play multiplayer, but besides version differences and bugs (you have to configure your router right, steam versions arent compatible - cant host for example,...) you also would have to find another player, which isnt easy seeing that there isnt any official platform available for that. besides steam of course.
a week ago there was talk about a chat system that may be implemented to make multiplayer possible for other versions than steam but the following statement from the same thread as above is the only thing that came up so far:
...As suggested here, we are currently implementing a global chat channel which will allow players to find each other more easily, and I hope that we'll have that live soon enough....
how that works, if its third party, if all versions can use it, if the bugs that make connections not work depending on vendor are fixed simultaniously, when it will come,... was not yet said.
