I see some numbers next to each of my generals before I can pick them for combat but its always 1. I'm just getting to act III and each general seems to well...suck. They raise the chance of victory MAYBE 5% and for 20 gold is hardly worth it.

So what do those numbers mean? Can they "Level up" and if so how?

Also Act III is hella hard if you go into it without any money frown

They do get a bit better, if you follow their "stories", but I think that they are still too weak most of the time.
Considering their cost and that you can only use them once per turn, they are not effective enough.

And yes, Act 3 can be hard if you don't have much money at the start of it.

Their skills are listed with a number after them, which suggests that they could increase levels in their skills. Anyone actually used generals long enough to check?

Unless otherwise specified, just an opinion or simple curiosity.

Just reloaded act II to re-run it and get some more research before running into act III and after finishing something with Henry's daughter one of his skills increased by...1. Still though, at the cost vs reward of using them I doubt I will be trusting many battles to any of them.

I like them and the stories they offer and would love to have some kind of leveling system for them (side quests!!!) but at the moment they have little to no value on the field.

Wouldn't it be cool if the generals ask for the dragons help every now and again? A quick little battle where the units are all AI controlled and you just fly in to offer a little aid? Oh well, add it to the wish-list.

I used them mostly later in Act 2 and occassionally in Act 3.
Ultimately I had only rarely the impression that they were really worth their money.

I wouldn't say no to Krunkerts idea - I think there is generally a lot of potential in providing some (side-)story-relevant missions, probably with different objectives from the usual build a base, destroy the enemy.

I was very fond of tutoring my generals, so I payed attention...

None of my skills, ever got higher than 1, oddly enough. Almost like Larian wanted to do more to increase a skill, but decided against it and never bothered to removed the "1" designation.

Your generals do get more skills however.

Scarlet for instance, is mainly an infantry defense specialist. Catherine a naval offense specialist.

Following their stories, Scarlet managed to gain an offensive 1 skill, and Catherine tacked along an aerial bonus.

That's about it though... I think it all fell victim to budget-titis.
