I saw there was already a thread but it seemed to deal more with AI, however after watching the Hatching the Dragon mini-documentary about Divinity 2, I actually think a combat system more like Dark Souls would work for the divinity series.
Now hear me out, you don't need the difficulty but perhaps a hybrid system could be implemented, say the standard Dark Souls setup with light/heavy attacks for left click/right click and allowing shift/tab for blocking/parrying, could use button clicks for combos, like three left clicks and then a heavy to finish a flurry of light attacks with a blow that knocks someone down. Where it could differ and allow a better magic system is let users use the number keys to activate skills much like in Divinity 2 itself. I think this would give the combat some more weight to it while still allowing for use of magics and skills to add to it, and it would allow characters playing mages and archers to defend themselves while in the thick of melee as well, rather then spamming arrows and back peddling (Heh its effective).
When using a bow perhaps have players hold in left click to pull back on the bow and release it to let loose the arrow, while you have right click be a minor knockback, like a quick kick while wielding bows so you have time to swap to some melee weaponry.
Anyways just my thoughts on the matter, and after buying a second copy of Divinity 2 from GoG and watching the behind the scenes, I feel pretty sad that the original concept was so cut down.
