Did we have discussion about this already? If so then please move this post there.
Well im kind of power gamer that searches every corner of the world and do every quest, kill all bunnies etc. So thats why in many games i reach max lvl many hours before i finish the game, and this sucks - it takes away lots of enjoyment. I was wondering how will this be addressed in DOS. Is there going to be lvl cap or mybe practically unreachable max lvl like in Skyrim and some other games or mybe no lvl cap?

now i remember that we talked about this already, if i remember correctly David said that if u will do almost everything in the world then u might get to lvl 20 before the end.
since this is not that many levels i hope they will be meaningful enough.

Although I guess it's not as big a deal in a game with no enemy respawning (which would allow for XP scumming), I really, really, really dislike hard level "caps". They usually eliminate further character development during the latter part of the game, which to me at least, is one of the most basic elements that makes an RPG fun.
If Larian is just implying that most players will naturally reach level 20 by the end of the game, but it would still be technically possible (though obviously improbable in practice) to reach level 100, I'm fine with that. But if they're talking about a hard cap, where once you hit a certain XP value, it's impossible to improve your characters any further... well, I just hope they're not talking about that.

Is that hyperbole or something, or do you really want to try and reach level 100 in a game designed to be finished at level 20. I don't really see levels 40-100 being all that interesting to play.

@Stabbey - yeah, hyperbole. I was just trying to make the point that cutting off player development at some arbitrary point - when there would otherwise still be in-game options for the player to further develop - is in my opinion a very bad thing.
I understand this "feature" is often used by devs to impose "game balance" - i.e. to force all players to face the end boss with level 20 stats. Yet it always feels like a cheap trick, and again, tends to kill the entire fun of investing in further developing a character.

only level 20? With the last update you got only 1 Point per Level... That means 20 Points... Firemagic is 1+2+3+4+5=15 Points, but you need also way of wizzard 1+2+3+4+5=15 and maybe one other spellgroup. How to Play this game now? Can't learn any social skill!

It's only 1 point per level until level 6. Starting then, it's two points per level until either level 11 or 15, after which it's 3 points per level.

On the other hand BG1 had only 7 or 9 levels, but leveling up in that game was smt really important, also i remember that u had to travel (with 4 characters) over 2 regions before u reached lvl2, while here in DOS i got to lvl2 before i came into town. This leveling curve needs to be well shaped -it musnt kick in too fast. Remember how it was in Gothic 2 where u had that port city and u were doing stuff there as long as u could because venturing out at that level would be suicidal - a mix of city adventure until u gear up and get to know how interactions work is imo very good approach in low levels.

During the last update, larian announced that they will/want overhaul the system. As they stated, they want to make progression "noticeable". So I expect some changes in the Skill-Requirements. Currently the progression is simply slowed down.

Yeah, right now all skills you don't start out with require 2 points in the appropriate area. I think that a bunch more skills - some with REQ 1 will be added, so there's things you can do with low-level points.

There are also other ways of getting skill points, other than leveling up. (Dialogue choices, etc)

It's only 1 point per level until level 6. Starting then, it's two points per level until either level 11 or 15, after which it's 3 points per level. So that would be around 42 points and be just about enough to max 3 skills out of A LOT. Now we do get items with skill levels in them to assist. But could make planning even more needing.

Don't forget, you can always hope to find +WhateverYourFavoriteAbilityIs bonuses on gear. A +1 can save you up to 5 ability points. More that that if you get a piece of gear with more than one ability boost. Of course, if they don't do something about repair and permanent durability loss, that's all out the window.

Once people start using the editor and publishing content, I expect that higher levels than twenty will begin to become commonplace. Particularly from overzealous editor users who create whole alternate campaigns or even regions. Not that I disapprove or anything, but that takes a great deal of time and effort.
