When I first explored the docks I was very excited to find a lootable fishing rod! Imagine my disappointment when I saw it was only a cheap weapon. sad

Since fish exist already in game and are lootable from crates and can be used as ingredients, fishing would be a nice side activity and add variety between questing and monster hunting. Is/was this a planned feature at some point?

I had the exact same feeling when I saw the beautifull fishing nets here and there. I hoped they would be activable, and that we could find some fresh, juicy rabbit err, fishes, my precious, inside them.

However, it seems that Larian won't go to any precise "gathering" or dedicated crafting skills (beside the blend "crafting" ability...), mostly beacause the world is not a randomly respawnable world, because there would be issues with XP scumming, blah blah blah...

This is really really a shame IMHO, but I already whinned a lot about this...

Yeah, the whole fishing/mining/foraging/hunting etc. thing would've been cool (and would've allowed for deeper alchemy/crafting gameplay, for people into that kind of thing), but like Cromcrom said, it's not something Larian chose to invest in.

They figure that's stuff the community can mod in once the editor comes out. At least that's how I see it. Another reason the editor's going to rock.

That's disappointing... Why have fishing rods be lootable items then? All it does is make me get my hopes up. Sure, you can equip them as a weapon - cool I guess?

Even if the devs went the Torchlight 2 route, that would be enough for me. I don't need to get combat XP from catching fish, it would be enough to gather ingredients for cooking and perhaps to sell.

I do admit that all the enthusiasm about "wow you can wear a bucket on your head and use a broom as a weapon! This is great" mystifies me a bit. I go "Okay... but practically speaking, those are terrible and they lose their novelty value after about 20 seconds".

Don't worry... I'm sure we'll see an epic quality bucket for you to wear.

Terrifying Bucket Of Broom Handling

It gives you +5% damage when using a broom and adds a 5% chance of causing fear to your target.

That was the type of world/item interaction in Divine Divinity that made a big impression on a lot of people, though. It isn't about actually using a pot as a helmet or a broom / frying pan as a weapon (though I did try someone else's save some time ago who had a wizard character, with a fork as a weapon), it is that you have the ability to.

Not bragging, but crossing fingers, and hoping I will be able to make it, because it is huge work, but I have a huge list (44, if that means anything, like, you know, skinning, butchering, prospection, mining, tracking, trapping, woodcrafting...) of gathering/crafting/world interaction/character managing skills to unleash on a randomized respawnable world.

I already created 3 such worlds for various RPGs, and I really hope DoS will be my masterpiece.
Can't wait to put my hands on the editor.

I also thought that fishing is gonna be in. Why not make fishing spots in rivers and ponds marked by swimming fish or bubble ripples that work the same way as conainers, and from which you can randomly get a fish, loot (like old boot, bag of coins etc) or nothing?

That's practically identical to what Torchlight 2 has. The difference is that there was no crafting in that game yet it still had fishing as a side activity. There was a limit on how many times you could fish in a hot spot, and it would disappear after 3-9 casts.

Sure it was simple and there was no -fishing- skill, but in DOS it would have a gameplay purpose besides being "roleplaying fluff".

I understand that perfectly, the problem is that it's 2014 and its been done before. Having a fishing rod that you can put in your hand and whack monsters with doesn't make me go "Wow" when I'd like to fish with it but I can't. For me that doesn't add to the immersion, it breaks it.

I'd like to be able to use the Sheep Shearers to shear sheep. Instead it just whacks the sheep for a bit of damage.

But then again, I can understand Larian not wanting to put in a bunch of things which are terminally boring to do even in the real world, never mind when you're trying to play a game, when there are a lot of other things that need a lot of work still.

It's not the same thing. Fishing is already set up to be a viable side activity that would help and benefit crafting. Many types of fish, many types of recipes and buffs as a result.

I agree that it's not as important as stat balance and whatnot, but for a game that totes interactivity as a main selling point there is very little of it in sight.

OMG Stabbey, it's not because you never catch a skeleton or a werefish in real life, that you shouldn't in a fantasy world...

It actually has the potential to become much more than just catching fish. It just takes a little imagination and... a fantasy world. smile

I doubt that they could add it for initial release, but perhaps as a late addition patch or even as part of an expansion.

Anything that adds to the interactivity of the world is a plus. That's what helps make a good CRPG a good CRPG.

Edit* Speaking of which, I'm surprised (unless I missed it and it's in somewhere) that Larian did not add payable instruments being this is in sorts a heavily Ultima inspired game.

Was always neat finding sheet music, then playing "stones" on a piano. and if I remember correctly, playing certain music would unlock hidden areas.

So my vote for fishing and playable instruments.

This. So this. While I like being able to use my guitar as a weapon, I would so love to pull it out and strum a tune now and then. Maybe even utilize that element for a bard type later on with an expansion.

Lol, that's exactly what came to my mind when I first found shears - I thought I could use them to get wool ingridient.
