*MANUAL INSTALL CLARIFICATIONS BELOW (RAZE, please edit where necessary)*

Raze, you have shown me the way - thank you, thank you!

I had not read/seen anything saying that one needs to remove the "read-only" status from the copied folders, localizations and static. Once I performed that step, the game loaded just fine and I was able to play without error.

I had time to play for just a minute thus far, so I only saw that the game indeed did run and I was able to save after going up the first ladder. At this point, all seems fine. Hopefully, I will not run into any future debilitating bugs. You can be sure that if I run into any problems, I will seek your guidance once again.

In my e-mail to you I placed a far more comprehensible and comprehensive manual installation procedure. I have since edited it and updated it with the information you gave me in the time since I sent it to you (see latest version below). I am sure others will need this in the future, so it might be a good idea to review it, edit where necessary, and sticky it, if possible. I think it will help ameliorate any confusion others might have.

Thanks again. It is nice to find such a helpful and patient soul on the boards.

***EDITED MANUAL INSTALLATION PROCEDURE***

FIRST: You need WinRar version 3.0 or later. Version 3.2 can be downloaded for free at www.rarlab.com.

SECOND: You will need the file "divdiv-eng.reg," which can be obtained here — [**INSERT LINK**]

THIRD: You will need the Divine Divinity patch v. 1.0 (patches the game to v. 1.34). This may be found at www.larian.com.

Manual Installation Procedure:

1. Insert "Installation Disc #1" and proceed with the installation as normal, but hit "cancel" once it hits 1% complete.

2. Open Windows Explorer.

3. Your 1% installation should have placed a Divine Divinity folder with a Run subfolder under "Program Files" within your main hard drive as well as several other miscellaneous files.

4. Go to your CD-ROM drive, open Install Disc #1, and unrar the "imagelists.rar" file to your now existing "C:\Program Files\Divine Divinity\Run" folder. If prompted to overwrite existing files, select "accept."

5. Place "Install Disc #2" into your CD-ROM drive. Unrar each of the five files found within into the "Run" folder exactly as in step 4 above.

6. Now place the Game Disk in your CD-ROM drive and copy the "Localizations" folder also to "C:\Program Files\Divine Divinity\Run."

7. Return to the Game Disk and copy the "Static" folder's contents (all files) to the already existing "C:\Program Files\Divine Divinity\Run\Static" folder. (The unraring you performed prior to this step created this "Static" folder, and it should already contain the subfolders "heroes" and "imagelists.")

8. On your hard drive, locate the "Localizations" folder and the files you copied to the "Static" folder (steps 6 and 7). Right click each file, select "Properties," and make sure "read-only" is unchecked on all of the files. Note: Your hard drive may take some time obtaining the properties of the larger files. You will have to uncheck most, if not all of them.

9. Return to the Game Disk and unrar the remainder of the disk's contents (there are a number of rar files on this disk) to the "Run" folder as previously done with both Install discs.

10. Using a text editor like Windows Notepad, open the "divdiv-eng.reg" file you downloaded above and edit it so that the "target folder" reads "C:\\Program Files\\Divine Divinity" and the "group folder" reads "C:\\WINDOWS\\Start Menu\\Programs\\Divine Divinity." If this was not the pathing you specified above during install, enter the correct paths here. Save your edits.

11. Now find the "divdiv-eng.reg" file on your hard drive and double-click it to edit your registry with the Divine Divinity information. This is required for the patch (step 12 below) to work.

12. Install Divine Divinity patch v. 1.0. The patch will find the folder you installed Divine Divinity to and proceed automatically. You will receive a "success" message once complete. This patches the game to v. 1.34.

12. Return to your hard drive's "C:\Program Files\Divine Divinity\Run" folder, right-click on "div.exe" and send a copy of it to the desktop for easy access.

13. Leaving the Game Disk in your CD-ROM drive, close all background programs and run Divine Divinity by double-clicking the div.exe icon you placed on your desktop (step 12 above).

ELB,

where's the link to "divdiv-eng.reg"?

i've been having problems with DD eversince i upgraded my OS. i've done tons of reinstallations, manual and normal, but not a thing worked. maybe this "divdiv-eng.reg" thing might be the thing i need. yeah it's a bit far-fetched but i've done lots of things to figure out how to run DD in my pc and none of them worked, i guess what i'm saying is what's one more try, just in case it works.

thanks in advance.

OK Texan emailed me the registry file he got from CDV, which can be downloaded here; Eng-divdiv_Win98ME.reg (right click, and select Save As). This also works fine under Windows XP. The registry file consists of the following;

Quote
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CDV Software Entertainment AG\Divine Divinity]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CDV Software Entertainment AG\Divine Divinity\English]
"target folder"="C:\\Programme\\Divine Divinity"
"group folder"="C:\\WINDOWS\\Startmenü\\Programme\\Divine Divinity"
"language"="English"
"version"="1.0"

If you have installed the game to a folder different than listed, for example "E:\Games\Divine Divinity", you will need to open the registry file in a text editor, and change the target folder to something like;

"target folder"="E:\\Games\\Divine Divinity"
~~~
The registry file should only be needed for the manual install, so that the patch can find the files it needs to update.
