First off, I love the game so far, I've been looking forward to it for a few months now and I finally decided to buy into the Beta. That said, my current situation with the main quest has left a bad taste in my mouth. I'm hoping that I've broken the quest myself as opposed to it being already broken, but here goes. I'm at the stage in A Mysterious Murder where you discover that there are four possible suspects who may have stolen the body, at least I think I am, I'm not entirely familiar with the way this game handles quest stages and their triggers.
Anyhow, I've spoken to Esmerelda and Evelyn (also spoken to the doctor himself), but the only one who appears to acknowledge my current quest stage is Esmerelda. I show her the letter, which I may as well mention I got after I spoke to the mortician, and she denies her involvement.
After doing some searching via Google and these forums I've learned that you can indeed get into Esmerelda's locked rooms, but the 'how' eludes me, I've searched high and low for a key (and I'm aware of using Alt to show items, so I don't think I've missed it) and tried bashing the door in, however the high health, high armour (or both) that the door has seems to tell me it's not the intended way to enter.
I've also read that the dog in the cemetery can trigger Esmerelda (or possibly Evelyn, the post wasn't clear) running and leaving behind a key, but I can't get the dog to smell any items, presumably because I don't have the ability to speak to animals. I've searched for both of these ladies' keys or a way to get into their respective hide-outs, but with no luck. Any keys I have found seem to be for chests.
I have read every post, guide, and resource I can find and have tried all of their solutions, but I don't seem to be able to trigger the right conversation/event to continue.
If you've stuck with me this far, thank you. The answer I am seeking through all this is whether I have broken the quest somehow or if I am stuck because I don't have lockpicking or the ability to speak to animals. Any tips, answers, or help? I realise that we're in beta and bugs are to be expected, the problem I have right now is that I'm not sure if I'm experiencing a bug, if my own stupidity has led me astray, or if I can't continue because I don't have the right skills/abilities (which I really hope isn't the case, brings back memories of System Shock.) Thanks for taking the time to read.

Nope. The quest log is a little unclear about what to do, but you need to look for evidence. You're looking for three pieces of evidence pointing at Esmerelda. Two are in her house, one is in a chest at the crime scene. The source hunters will comment if you find one. Once you have all three, take them to either Aureus or Esmerelda.

Try the upper floor of her store  Where you will find a key to her private quarters, and with some proper investigation skills (chest) at the "murder scene" and the items you find in her private rooms and "cellar" you will advance the quest further... The stairs are right to the left when you enter her store, very easy to miss (like all stairs in this game) Ps.: No idea how to mark spoilers in this forum... but obviously this post in itself is going to be 1 huge spoiler.. so no point talking around the bush... Also the chest at the murder scene is another one of those "what the heck was Larian thinking" moments, it's occluded by the wall when you enter... like the hatch to her cellar as well (I can't even put in words how much this aggravated me when I was stuck on the same thing)

I managed to miss the key upstairs even though I searched multiple times Thanks for the help, guys.

I will ask in this thread since it's main quest related.
So I finished(I think) the main quest by killing the culprit who murdered the poor councilor, but I can't finish it with any of NPCs. Is this all what's in beta related to main quest or I need to report to someone who isn't mentioned in this useless ingame quest journal?

AFAIK that quest closes talking to Jake, and the new quest "The White Witch" opens. Did that happen?

Um Jake? But he was a zombie. He died in fire pool with that witch Evelyn.

Hi, I also got one question, jake's quest related : so, I got the clues for Esmeralda, but when reporting to Aureus, Roderick and scarlett got into an argument and decided to not report her, due to circumstancial evidence, until more evidence is found. The quest was marked as completed
After confronted her, she directs me to Evelyn. Is this quest now broken, or can it be resolved along with the undead one ?

She fled (I found she moved Jack's corpse). Haven't find her yet

Yeah, seems ressurecting NPC's is bugged at the moment. More people report that.
It does seem like somewhat of a cop-out in several situations though (kill NPC, finish quest, raise NPC).

More like an exploit. You can resurrect Jake, kill him, get XP, gold and items, rez him again and repeat. Scroll/spell cost pennies and Jake drops like ~500-700 gold.

Well, that's a new one.
But, yeah, that doesn't seem very intended either. But maybe they will fix that respawn issue globally (as also enemy ressurections give XP again, and there's one very easy XP-exploit in the game because of that).
