besides enchanted items, how do you raise your resistances? By upping your constitution?

nope srry, only by items and 1 skill (forgot the name)

Well, magic barrier raises some protection against combat magic, but personally I don't know if it works for natural poisons for example and such.

Purple potions raise res. on temporary basis
Spell shield eases the damage from posion and other mag. damage
Magic barrier lvl 5 gives you permanent +25 on every res.
Well, last not least charms
