I'm currently playing this game with a friend and when we save and reload the game after obtaining companions, I am the only one that can control them. I can't even link them to my friends character. Is there a way that he can control one and I can control one instead of me having to control both?

You can ask one companion to leave your party, and your friend can then re-hire them (in the King Crab tavern or the Homestead, depending on how far you are in the game). You'll need to do this every time you reload the game, until the functionality gets added to just allow direct rearranging in co-op.
