Hey,
Just a quick question. Will it be possible to play coop while someone is using the steam version and the other using the game directly from the dvd?
Greetings

That is actually something which I also would like to know. The same goes for GOG+Steam and GOG+DVD.

Greetings I'm not sure but my guess would be no simply because if that was the case I don't see why they'd include 2 steam keys in the CEs.

Have they ever suggested "online co-op" would require Steam?
Maybe someone using the DVD version will be able to add it to Steam as a non-Steam game (to access the overlay and invite functions)?

No, but they have not officially confirmed compatibility between Steam and DRM free versions, either.

Logically, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense NOT to allow it.
But of course, programming-wise, with the invite/drop-in system and Steam overlay and what-not, that's not exactly the same.
I do hope very much they make it possible, if it isn't already. I do wonder how one would invite friends then on a non-Steam version, seeing how the current invitations work (but while at Larian MP used a system similar to Dragon Commander so I suppose from there...)

I was wondering if two people could play if they are on the same network....like if they live in the same house or are close neighbors or something. I wonder if there's a system that allows them to play together on non-steam versions of the game.

It isn't a question of 'allowing' it. The intent was always to have cross version/platform compatibility, but before actually implementing the network infrastructure, Larian didn't want to confirm it, in case any technical issues cropped up.
There will be LAN support, as well as direct IP.

Thanks for that, I was fairly certain I remembered something about LAN support but couldn't remember if it was 100% confirmed or if it might not end up in the full game or whatever so I didn't want to speak out of term.

I'm well aware of that... that was what the second line was about
