I've done as suggested and reloaded to try several swords. The intangibles I don't know the importance of are "sword speed, frost, death blow, and stun".

I have 3 swords I can choose that all have about the same damage and vitality when on my character, but how much do the different characteristics matter?

The following are the stats of my character when equiped with each sword with no charms:

sword 1 - offense 42, defense 44, damage 67-106 (lowest by far), speed 8 (by far the fastest of my choices) has frost 4, death blow 3, lightning 4, spirit dam 5, charm 1

sword 2 - off 47, def 48, damage 106-145, death blow 3, stun 4, charm 1

sword 3 - off 50, def 47, dam 102-147, charm 1, frost 2

sword 4 - off 46, def 44, dam 97-136, charm 2

Do the damage numbers outweigh the offense numbers, and do either take into account speed or "stun, frost, light, death blow, etc"?

I enjoy the game, and didn't discover the forum until well into it. I want to learn from you and plan ahead.

Thanks

I'd get the
Quote
sword 3 - off 50, def 47, dam 102-147, charm 1, frost 2

one, has some nice damage, and offense/defense. frost is really nice.

I think the damages are not from the sword itself. Maw damage on a one-hander is 70-100 (akaik). But i'd go for the first one. Less damage, but more and better extra's

So what's the scoop wth "speed" as a swords characteristics? The sword with speed 8 sells for much more when trading. I read 30 pages of tips, and searched, but couldn't find out.

The stats of the swords themselves probably would have been be easier to compare.

If you max Sword Expertise, your recuperation time will be zero anyway, so except for the start of the game, speed on a weapon doesn't make much difference (you can not go below zero).
(Net recuperation time) = (base recuperation time) - (weapon speed)

Frost effects all monsters regardless of resistances. I tried a sword with frost on it briefly, but it made the fights too boring. Some people like them for bosses or difficult situations.

Death Blow shakes the screen, though it does not hit that often (I think level 5 is 5%, IIRC). I found this annoying and it didn't help that much in the wastelands (it could kick in on the third hit against monsters I only needed two or sometimes three hits to kill).

Stun is good (once you start hitting, their attack and defense effectiveness is dropped), though if you also have the passive Stun skill some monsters can hang in mid death animation (an area effect spell which does not need a target will force them to finish dying, though).

The first sword would make the game a cake walk (the lower damage would just mean an extra swing might be required to kill something); I would go with the second. Try out each save, and see what you think of the effects and rate of damage for the different swords.

OK... I tried 1 and 3. 3 is WAY better! My life would go down with 1, and it did take more hits...so I think speed is worse the higher the number. Anyway, #3 is good so I'm staying with it.

BTW, "frost" didn't happen much on either sword until I got to a monster that gives me more than 2000 XP. I still killed them, but didn't even know what frost did until later when I got to a stronger monster.

Thanks to all.

A higher speed is better, but the third sword has a higher offense (better chance to hit), which combined with the higher damage, make it a better choice. I didn't notice the offense with the first sword was so much lower. Depending on your level of Sword Expertise, the recovery time was probably not much faster for the first sword.

First sword is good because it got much of spells but low damage but 3rd sword had very good damage but almost no spells. Any way put some points to Spiritual damage (At the best 5 lvl5 dam> 20+30 ) and you will have great damage & god sword

Can you add damages to a sword and have all of them work? I have poison sword level 5 skill. Are you saying build up spiritual damage also (is that a skill)?

I have 2 skill points to work with but haven't used them yet. I only have problems with major monsters...and still manage to kill them if I plan right and use health potions.

I want to save a point in case I get a charm 4 item (skill at 3), but don't see any other skill at level 31 that looks imperative.

Speed decreases the Recuperation Time. You can reduce the Recuperation Time of any sword to zero with level 5 Sword Expertise. If you are learning that skill, then the Speed factor is irrelivent.

My choice would be with the Frost sword. Frost can make the game extremely easy and you will have no problems for the rest of the game. I bought a sword with Frost (3) and haven't died since. If you want a challenge, but still a good sword, take the second one.
