So for this game, is multiplayer simply 2 player co-op drop in ?

Will they add more player slots ?

Will they add options to create a multiplayer game and have each participant create his own character ?

Anything to make this more multiplayer like games in the Infinity Engine ?

For story reasons, the base game supports 2-player co-op, but 4-player co-op works, Larian tested it in a mod. I'm sure that a mod will come out, Either from Larian or someone else that supports 4-player co-op.

There's already a "Start Multiplayer Game" which lets each player create their own character.

Mods can support 4 players, and as Stabbey said the main game can also be modded to allow 4 (Larian just wanted to focus on writing dialogue for 2 main characters, since that will likely be the way it is played the most, single player or 2 player co-op).

Thank you for the replies, I also looked around and it does seem it's only 2 player co-op because they limited to that for story reasons, and that mods will be able to include more players.

And I didn't realize that with 2-player multiplayer, each player could customize their character when the game started.
