journal tells me i should tell aureus about the lost archaeologist (whom i safely escorted). but there is no dialog option.

When I went to Aureus after the quest, the archeologist was there talking to him and they automatically talked to me (if I remember correctly).

Did you wait long after completing the quest before going to Aureus?

did you try all dialogue options? I've found some quests require prompting through the various conversation options.

Did you talk to Wolfram in the King Crab? I don't know if you need to do that first, but it can't hurt to try.

i did. wolfram did not show up at aureus.
i did the lighthouse quest in between (i.e. save wolfram, talk to him in the tavern, did some other stuff, save the soldiers). the soldier did show up.

I have just double-checked this quest, in Aureus his dialog there should be an option to say :

-"Let's discuss these expeditions into hostile territory you mentioned."
-"So, about these burial grounds..."

After you have completed the escort, this should fully complete the quest when bringing up the topic to Aureus.

This should do it. I had pretty much the same issue in beta. I didn't know the archaeologist had anything to do with the burial grounds.

Exactly.

I had the same problem yesterday.
Perhaps the game should highlight dialog in white for those you haven't asked and in light gray for what you already talked about.

But when the Quest Log says: "Go talk to NPC XYZ", simply trigger all dialog options.
