So I'm at the character select screen and I'm going to "customize" my Fighter class. Is there any "wrong" way to do this that will effect something drastically in the game?

Just curious. There is so much stuff to go through in this it's absurdly epic.

Yeah, you'll mess up a few things on the first playthrough. There's one respec opportunity later in, but still.

Best to go with the flow and worry about optimization when you play it over again

If it's your first game, stick with one of the default pre-definitions.
Don't go mucking about with the advanced creation, since yeah, you can mess your character up pretty badly...
