Firstly, i really love the game. So far it has been great fun.

But those freaking NPCs are driving me insane with their constant chatter. If go into my inventory to play with my stats all i hear in the background is the same 5 lines over and over and OVER. The problem is, each time a conversation is over, it just loops around and starts again straight away.
There was a place i was standing on the docks in the first city where i literally wanted to take a drill to my head the 8th time i heard the conversation as i was trying to identify a few items and compare some stats.

Would be awesome if they only started a conversation once each time you come withing "conversation hearing" distance. They can say their line every time i come past them, that's fine, but repeating it over and over while i am standing next to them is making me crazy.

Are you playing Steam or GOG Isisius? They patched down the frequency in the latest build, it's not on GOG yet.

They just reduced the frequency in today's patch. It's already a step backwards as far as I'm concerned and I would hate to see it get even more "quiet".

Honestly, if people are having a problem tuning out these distant voices to the point where they're just subtle background noise, you probably need to do some adjustment on your individual volume settings in the audio options panel. I would imagine any sound would get annoying if it's repeated *loudly*. The key there is to make it less loud, which you have the ability to do.

So i dont want to turn voices off, i think that would ruin the immersion of the game. I just dont want it spammed at me over and over.

So i dont have a problem with the volume, just the frequency of the same lines if im standing next to them.
I like hearing what they are saying, some of its funny, or informative, and it adds to the world. But hearing the same story 8 times in a row, that consisted of maybe 6 lines, without a break between each cycle breaks the immersion of the game for me.

They fixed the thing that was annoying - the npcs talking during dialogues, which was extremely annoying and concentration breaking. Now, it still stays while you read a book, but it's not as annoying as you can usually go read the book in some quieter place.
I think the frequency and radius could be reduced a bit more.
I remember this was incredibly well done in Baldur's Gate 2. In the city you could hear all the time the distant chatter of people, like environmental noise and when you got near some voiced NPC it would say something occasionally.
Made the atmosphere great without being intrusive.
Something like that would be great.

Yeah i remember that. It was nice because you can hear background chatter but nothing specific. Thats fine, thats environmental and if done well adds immersion by making a place feel busy. Hearing a guy talk about what the captain did the last time they were in port 8 times makes the guy talking seem a little slow, as he loudly laughs and explains the story again.

Yeah, and not only that, but hearing the same thing 10 times in the span of couple of minutes, and hearing it so intrusively, kind of breaks immersion, as it obviously reminds you this is a piece of software with limited resources, where all NPCs can't have thousands of unique lines for just environmental chatter.
I am not sure how they have done it in code but and if its easy to change that part, but it would be nice if the NPCs stop repeating or greatly reduce their repetition if you stay in their radius after they have said all their unique lines once.
If you reenter they could say them again.
That would certainly make it much less intrusive and still keep it vivid.
