That is the troll cave. Do you already have the quest to deal with the trolls? If not, get it in the farmlands, just across the bridge, before entering or you might miss out on a bit of experience.
As for the crashing, there is a cut scene conversation when you get close enough to the troll king. Try running the configuration program and temporarily switching to software mode, and perhaps lower the resolution; this helps with some cut scene problems.

just after i posted this topic, i reloaded my game and avoided the cave. i went to the farmhouse. now the game crashes to desktop when i get close to the farmhouse.
i tried running the game in a lot of different modes and it still crashed in every single mode...my usual mode is 1024x768 with some of the graphics settings turned up...

i was just looking at this, and this caught my eye, beccause i have a radeon:
"3) Problem: Crash during the scrying scenes On some systems, most notably some Radeon cards and some 3DFX cards, the game crashes during the scrying scenes when running the game in Direct3D. To solve this, run the game in Software or Directdraw mode for the duration of the scrying scenes. "
im gonna go try it in direct draw and software mode right now (even though i already tried that earlier), but what the heck is a scrying scene? a cutscene type thing where characters talk and stuff maybe? ]
EDIT: it didnt work. i also reinstalled once already and that didnt work...

scry = remote view by magic, usually with the help of a crystal ball or pool of water You will (hopefully) do this later in the game, to find a few people (it is a cut scene video).
Did you have to skip the video test to play in Direct3D mode? Some Radeon cards just give a black screen for the test, though will play the game fine if it is skipped.

another update:
i just decided i wanted to try and just avoid both the farmhouse AND the cave, and i went to the next town down the road.
guess what?
more crashes to desktop.
i am starting to get the suspision that whenever the game is supposed to go in to a in-game cinematic type thing where characters talk and what-not, (dont know the real name for these) the game crashes to desktop. how lovely.
arg.

Did you check out the tips in the readme text file? Other than turning off hardware sound acceleration or playing with the video options, I'm not sure what else to do. I don't know why the cut scenes in Aleroth worked, but others cause the game to crash. Try starting a new game, then running to the troll cave and see if it crashes. Maybe save the new game first, and use iZakaroN's SaveEditor to bump up your constitution. Try emailing support@larian.com with a link to this topic.

emailed tech support.
i tried your suggestion and made a test character, and used that program to give her like 1k hit points and lots of stamina...i ran to the troll cave, and the same thing happened. =/
EDIT: how long does it generally take tech support to get back to you?

on a different forum, somebody just suggested to me this:
"Did you ever have the demo installed? This sounds like the limits on the demo. I would suggest uninstall the demo, killing all the files ... then reinstalling the game.
Just a guess here."
my response:
i DID have the demo installed, but i alreayd uninstalled it...hmmm your theory though is insteresting...
does the demo install to the same folder as DD?
because if so, then when i reinstalled the game once already i deleted the DD folder before installing again...
so if that IS the problem, it would have to be a registry entry.
hmmm
so what do you think raze? is he on to something?

Unfortunately, the only thing Divinity uses the registry for is so that the patch can find the install path. You can check your registry and see if anything looks peculiar, though. The reg file CDV sent to someone for the manual install procedure (note the german default install path) consists of; REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CDV Software Entertainment AG\Divine Divinity]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CDV Software Entertainment AG\Divine Divinity\English] "target folder"="C:\\Programme\\Divine Divinity" "group folder"="C:\\WINDOWS\\Startmenü\\Programme\\Divine Divinity" "language"="English" "version"="1.0"

crap, everything looks fine in the registry entry...
and tech support still hasnt emailed me back =/
lol this sucks, i only played the game for a day before it became unplayable =[
edit: i dont know why i didnt think to look at this earlier or even if it will help, but sometimes it seems when the game crashes, windowsXP actually tells me that divine divinity needs to close...
this is the info it says
Error Signature:
AppName: div.exe AppVer: 1.0.0.34 ModName: div.exe ModVer: 1.0.0.34 Offset: 001fb667
also do you think its possible that maybe i got a bad CD? i was just thinking that maybe if this hasnt been resolved in a couple days maybe i should bring my game back to the store and tell them it doesnt work so i can cut my losses... =/
dont get me wrong i dont mean to whine, but i payed 20 bucks for this game and im low on money lately as it is...so i really wouldnt like to have spent 20 bucks on a game that wont work ya know? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />

Have you installed all the critical updates for Windows? You shut down all non essential programs before starting the Divinity? Probably.... If the game installs fine I don't think there would likely be a problem with the CDs. Did you try the file verification method mentioned in the manual install post?

it's not a memory issue is it? my guess would be XP isn't playing well with others-check for updates like Raze suggests. i've had crashes too, but the suggestions helped.
smiles!

ya, i have all the windows updates and stuff.
i just ran that filecheck program, and it got one error:
Error Code 23 reading file C:\Program Files\Divine Divinity\Run\static\imagelists\CPackedb.1c
could that be it?

That could be the problem, or at least a problem. Browse to that folder in Explorer and check the file size; unless the patch updates the file, it should be 385,617,662 bytes. If not, try re-extracting it from the install disk 1, ..\disc1\imagelists.rar file.
Try running ScanDisk (in Explorer right click on the drive letter, select Properties, then the Tools tab, then 'check now' under Error-checking Status). Maybe the file got cross-linked or something, though it is more likely a problem extracting it, since the same thing happened on re-installing the game.

sweet beautiful glorious victory!!! victory over the bug, that is <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />
when i replaced the file with the same file on the disc, my problems went away...
i still dont understand how the hell this happened though...i mean, i DID reinstall it. how could have the same problem happened twice with the same file, on two different installs, when i deleted the folder even before i reinstalled? and THEN, when i take that same file from the disc that the install used, it magically becomes ok?...
also, i did check the file size on it before i replaced it, and it was the same file size you had.
maybe there was something wrong with the way it was being installed or something? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
oh well, as long as it is fixed then thats all that matters i guess...
thanks so much raze =D
im so glad i dont have to take the game back to the store now lol
