If you're at max level and craft a superior weapon, you can NOT further improve its damage by using a whetstone. Tested it on a normal, looted weapon and it works. Tested it on a crafted level 4 weapon again and it works as well.

Also, why does "improving plate armor" requires CRAFTING and not BLACKSMITHGING? Makes no sense and it should be switched.

Any level above level 5 in Blacksmithing also doesn't yield any benefit (same for crafting I assume). So please cap it at level 5 (even if you add items), because it's very confusing. I thought I get even better stats when I have black smith beyond 5 until I tested it in detail. Wasted 4 skill points. =/

I don't think blacksmithing is bugged (in your scenario anyway).

What is happening is that the weapon you are creating (blacksmithing) at level 5+ is receiving the highest damage boost the weapon can get right off the bat.

There are 3 tiers of damage boosts (low, medium, high). This game does not stack affixes so once you get the highest damage boost affix on the weapon the whetstone will not work, since it basically adds a low to medium damage boost depending on your blacksmithing level.

If you get a +stat affix (like say +1 strength) instead of a +damage affix, however, then the whetstone will work

And yes, according to the excel crafting sheet that's been posted, it seems crafting and blacksmithing benefits cap out at 5 currently.

High level blacksmith items can come with small boni. For 2H axes this is additional damage or critical hit chance. If you get the additional damage version, you can't improve that damage any further with the whetstone, making the crit version superior (although the nominal damage of a sharpened crit axe is still lower, the additional crit damage makes up for it).
