Ok... I'm just going to assume you haven't played far into the game.

At the start yes melee are bad, they hit like wet noodles, are squishy and waste most of their AP running back and forth. Compared to a mage that can summon a spider that hits as hard as a melee 3-4 times per turn and can nuke and CC from range it may seem melee suck.

Play the game for a bit and suddenly melee are virtually invulnerable with 100+% magic resists, leech and comeback kid you swing your weapon for 400+ a swing non-crit and can jump around the map without issue. Once you get to that point your mages will probably be just there to buff your melee. Desecration, bless, wildfire and featherfall are good times.
