They can used to craft shields.

They got nerfed out of the beta, because they were over-powered as trap-vent covers. They went from common as dirt to completely absent, and don't appear to be back in the game. I think we have to count that recipe book as obsolete.

so there's no way to craft your own shields then?

Looks like the answer is nope. The object exists, but there is nothing setup to have it present in the world so it cannot be crafted. I'm compiling a list of recipe for a mod. I've added a substitute for Barrel Lids as an item.
