So am I supposed to be able to solve this murder while staying in town? I found the letter, but that's all the evidence I have (other than Jake turned into someone's lamb after he was buried). I mean this is supposed to be why I came to this town right? Just seems that after talking to everyone and going everywhere I can in town that I'm missing something. Everything outside of town seems to be unrelated to the actual murder case.

I've read about finding a book and dagger. Did I miss those? Are they in town? I don't want exact locations, I just want to know if I missed something.

Thanks.

They're in town, but not in an immediately obvious area. Dig deeper.

When you say "letter", which one would you be referring to? You may have missed something, at some point you should have four primary suspects.

Surely he meant the suspicious love letter.

You may wish to talk to the cat/wizard you met before entry to town for further clues.

I am quite stumped on this as well. No matter what I do, I cannot seem to progress.

- Cannot steal any smelly clothes from any of the fourt suspects (pickpocket 1 is too low apparently)
- Cannot break into any of the houses of the four suspects short of destroying their doors and losing weapons in the process (lockpick 1 is not enough)
- Talking to any of them does not lead to any new options
- The letter on the murder scene does not really help bring the story forward either

So is my only way really forcefully breaking into the respective houses?

You do not solve the murder strictly by staying in town, technically. However all the clues you need to point you in the right direction are in town. It can be done without using smelly items/pet pal which only give you the primary suspect anyway. That will not tell you where to go in order to investigate the suspect.

Lastly you will need an item from town to complete the quest if I am not mistaken. It is needed to fully investigate the primary suspect.

Good luck.

Edit: I just realized I completed this quest prior to finishing another area in Cyseal, so I can't say for certain that item is needed, or if perhaps the missed area (also not in town) offers an alternative method of investigation or options not involving breaking in to everyone's houses.

By the way you can destroy doors without losing durability, or having unbreakable weapons.

Lucking out on finding an unbreakable weapon is awesome. I found one pretty early and just keep it around for bashing stuff.

But I'm kinda hitting a wall in the quest too. I've found a LOT of clues pointing to the wife, but now I'm told to go after Evelyn as a suspect. Figure I'll just keep trudging along as I do random stuff and it'll work itself out.

The quest is much more simplistic than it seems, but of course until you've done it you wouldn't know that haha.

Step One - Talk to the Wizzycat
Step Two - Investigate the peoples by entering their trespassing areas.
Step Three - Talk to his Widow once you've found "incriminating evidence"
Step Four - Leave town!

Blacksmithing 1 let's you repair weapons with the repair hammer, always found inside the locked door of the crab inn 2nd floor (requires lockpicking 2 to unlock it, it's in the middle chest on the north side every time).
Lockpicking 2 does everything you need in town, ideally find a lockpicking +1 item to go with your 1 point you've invested on some character.

Couple more points - The Smelly clothes are not all obvious. The shoes, for example, look like ordinary armor 3 footwear with no special border. the smelly panties, however, re obvious - feel free to remember places have more than one floor!

But yes, the only way to play this game is to remember you're investigating a crime, not playing dress up with dollies. Don't be misguided thinking breking into someone's home is wrong... it's your job for heaven's sake!
