In “Early starter tips” Raze says “If you see a pile of something, move it out of the way. Often there will be something under, behind or between whatever is piled up.” I have moved many piles of garbage, rotten food, broken bottles, etc. and have found no hidden items. Occasionally, there will be an item I can see, but cannot reach before I move a bale, or something else. Are there really HIDDEN items that only moving piles can expose? I sure am getting tired of moving garbage around.

Hi,
Yes....There might be somthing around. I've found that in general, when you're playing an rpg, patience is nice to have. If you're in too much of a rush, then you might miss out on something important or you may be less likely to get a valuable item. Also, make a habit of reading the books in the game. Many of them are interesting but if you just disregard them, you'll miss some skills and information that might be useful to you.
Thanks.

Thank-you, Lockmar, for your courteous replies. I appreciate your advice to take my time to fully explore the world. However, I find that moving piles is especially tedious because: 1) There are so many of them. 2) Moving piles is clumsy: Your character has to move close to them to begin, and then it is difficult to move the pile, instead of making your character run around. It appears that just clicking on the pile with its name highlighted is not enough. There 'may' be a sweet spot close to the bottom, but getting it all the time is difficult (same problem with picking up items) I doubt I will continue to move all the piles, and just hope nothing really important is hidden within one of them. If, perhaps, some kind soul would reveal the location of piles with important hidden items... Thanks again!

Common piles of garbage or a couple barrels are not likely to be hiding something, but if you see an unusually high pile of rocks, several rows of barrels, a stack of crates in an otherwise mostly empty room, etc. then check for something hidden.
There is a set of leggings between a pile of crates in the house with the magic mirror in northern Aleroth. IIRC, alt will not show the description, though you may be able to catch it if you happen to run your cursor over it. The hatch in Jake's house is covered by crates.

The ALT key will show any hidden items, doors and hatches, even if they are covered by junk. It will not show cave enterances, ladders, teleporter pads or portal stones.
I've also noticed that, especially in Ellona's dungeon, unless the item is visible on the screen (not hidden behind a wall graphic), the ALT will not show it.

Thank-you Raze and HandEFood. I have put your advice to good use. I have stopped moving everything, and by concentrating on the larger "piles", and those located in strategic locations, have discovered some very good things.
And thank-you Lockmar. I continue to scrutinize books and other items, and appreciate the detail they convey.

Hello All,
First, I apologize for bringing up a pretty old topic here. I'm new to the game (which i must say is absolutely awesome) and this forum - which is equally great (i've been lurking for a few days now, and i'm impressed by the cohesiveness and friendliness around here).
Anyway, my question is pretty simple: how do i move items? simply left click on them? Do i have to drag the object away then? I tend to get the response "I can't use that now" or something like that. someone above mentioned a "sweet spot" - perhaps i'm just missing it.
Another, unrelated, Newbie question: can i only rest on beds? specifically my bed (or one in an empty house, which i've done before) - i can't just camp out somewhere, right?
ok, thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me

weapons and armoury you can move but most others you have to drag....you can only sleep when the house is definantly empty....

Left clicking on an object triggers the default option; open a letter, use a potion, pick up equipment, etc. If the default action is not to pick up, you need to drag and drop to move.
If you bring a couple bundles of straw with you, you can make a hay bed wherever you want (click on one bundle to open it, then drag and drop another bundle of straw on it), but once made on the ground it can not be moved (you can make a hay bed inside a container, though). You should also come across a portable bed in your exploration; spoiler: [color:"#3A495A"]in a house north of the cursed abbey[/color] (highlight the text to read).
Welcome to the forum.

cool, thanks for the quick replies (and the greeting!).
I'll check it out when i get a chance to play - i'm just finishing up the Aleroth quests, and have just left for the garrison - after reading around here, i see i need to head back to town and finish clearing out the catacombs and explore the countryside around the town a bit more. So, i'm not sure where the C.A. is, but i'll keep it in mind when i do encounter it
this game is awesome - its like a pleasant mix between arcanum and diablo - linear enough so it has direction, non-linear enough so i have a sense of freedom and a world to explore (which countless other games don't provide)
Thanks again

Another thing, you can only drag and drop objects when you are close enough. When you float your mouse over them, they turn white if you are close enough or red if you are not. I find it can help to click on them once to get as close as possible, then drag them.
