You can ask for someone identify it for you for some money, or you can pass by lvl, and put skill points in identify passive skill.

Identify skill - Survivor, Path of Lore
If you run your mouse over an item or hit the alt key, its properties will be set, even if you can not see the description. If you quick save before this, you can quick load repeatedly to try to get the best stats (though too much of that would just waste time).

Just wondering... When is the stats given to the item, -When you pick it up (and have no ID-skill), or when the merchant identifies it for you.
The reason I ask is that I took the dragon gloves to the merchant, and they came out the same everytime he identified them.

The stats are given when you pick up an item. So save before picking up that item and reload for beter stats.

The stats are set when you press ALT, or when you float the cursor over them, regardless of whether you take it or not. If you can see the name of the item, its stats are already set in stone.

Oops, looks like I have to live with the crappy gloves <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ouch.gif" alt="" />.
I guess I took the chance because when I was given the dragon breastplate last time, it wasn't set before I looked at it in the inventory.
Though, that was also the first time I saw it's name <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif" alt="" />.

P.s
That sword in the woods NW on the map that the character finds familiar (but can't pick up), is that conferring to the intro?
