Please can anyone tell me what the difference is between a level 5 amulet/ring/whatever with, say, strength +1 and a level 13 amulet/ring/whatever also with strength +1?
Surely strength +1 is strength +1 so if my level 5 amulet also has constitution +1 and my level 13 is just strength +1 there's no point in keeping the level 13 amulet?

Nope, there is not. Level itself really doesn't matter much other than being a minimum requirement for said item.

But there is no minimum requirement for items. You can equip any level item whenever you want. You get an action point penalty for low level on weapons, but that's all.

Equipment level determines the scale of buffs they can get. A low level ring can only get +1's, while a high level ring is likely to get +2's. Also with enchanting, for example using a ruby on a level 13 armour piece would give all resists +20%, doing the same on a level 18 armour piece would give +25% to all.
