I just purchased this game and it will not launch.

When I try to launch the game in steam it proceeds to say installing directX then it completes and nothing happens

I have checked all running processes and the game is nowhere to be found frown

I suspect it might have something to do with my setup. I am running a 3x1 Eyefinity crossfire setup in 5760x1080 resolution.

Any thoughts?

Try starting the game directly from the '..\SteamApps\common\Divinity - Original Sin\Shipping\EoCApp.exe' program file, by right clicking and selecting run as administrator.

Try manually setting the resolution, and running in windowed or fake fullscreen mode. If the game doesn't get far enough to create the configuration file mentioned below, try temporarily lowering your desktop resolution, or disabling Eyefinity.

You can edit the graphicSettings.lsx file (in the '..\Documents\Larian Studios\Divinity Original Sin' folder) in Wordpad, or other text editor, to manually change the resolution. Search for the section:

</node>
<node id="ConfigEntry">
<attribute id="MapKey" value="ScreenHeight" type="22" />
<attribute id="Type" value="0" type="5" />
<attribute id="Value" value="1600" type="4" />
</node>
<node id="ConfigEntry">
<attribute id="MapKey" value="ScreenWidth" type="22" />
<attribute id="Type" value="0" type="5" />
<attribute id="Value" value="2560" type="4" />
</node>

Search for 'fake' near the start of the file to set the display mode (if both FakeFullscreen and Fullscreen are set to zero, it will be in Window mode).

<node id="ConfigEntry">
<attribute id="MapKey" value="FakeFullscreenEnabled" type="22" />
<attribute id="Type" value="0" type="5" />
<attribute id="Value" value="0" type="4" />
</node>
<node id="ConfigEntry">
<attribute id="MapKey" value="FrameCapFPS" type="22" />
<attribute id="Type" value="0" type="5" />
<attribute id="Value" value="60" type="4" />
</node>
<node id="ConfigEntry">
<attribute id="MapKey" value="Fullscreen" type="22" />
<attribute id="Type" value="0" type="5" />
<attribute id="Value" value="1" type="4" />
</node>

And here we go...

Same problem here all of a sudden tonight, after D:OS updates & several Win7 updates since last time I played. Really, really, REALLY pisses me off no end when crap like ths occurs. I've just wasted half my night on resolving other people's incompetencies & issues, something I do for a living & the last thing I need to be doing on my very few evenings off to play a game I thought I was going to enjoy!

Anyway, I'm an IT pro/vet since before PCs existed, so yes, I've tried absolutely *everything* - run with Steam (checked all local cache/files), direct .exe, as admin of course, full screen/window, etc, etc. Not going to start reinstalling DOS/Windows files/drivers/etc unless someone at Larian or MS wants to pay me for my time. You all have a great day/night also - hopefully better than mine.

Now, off to read my Steam refund policy...

----

A little more info for whoever screwed this up royally (not that they deserve it): game goes through initial load screen, top blue bar fills to around 90-95% then fade to black & before menu comes up the thing CTDs with:

"DOS has stopped working.

Windows can check blah, blah, blah.
Check Online for a solution or Close program."

Every time.

Please email supportdos@larian.com, with a description of the problem and the report.zip file generated by the D:OS support tool (for the PC version). The report will contain system and game information, any crash dumps, and your saved games (which are not relevant in this case, so can be deleted from the zip if file size is an issue).

If you haven't already, you could try browsing to the '..\Documents\Larian Studios' folder and renaming the 'Divinity Original Sin' subfolder.
This folder contains the saved games, configuration files and a level cache folder. Deleting or renaming it will get the game to recreate it on startup; playing the game from a different Windows user account would effectively do the same thing.
If that gets the game to start, you can move your save folders from the original profile folder to the new one.

Sorry to ask stupid question Nostromo but do you mean that the game literally crashes as it first starts or that a save game crashes as you try to launch it?

I only ask because I have had a couple of corrupt saves, sometimes the latest save will crash game but the next one down works fine.

Assume you have no other machine to try it on available either? It works perfectly for me at home apart from the occasional crash as I exit the game, but will not work on my work PC.

Sorry, another obvious question!

Crashes on first load screen (or just after) - haven't tried to even load a game yet.
And I played it last night for a bit, with no issues - what's changed? A minor Steam update + some Win7 patches as far as I can see. Haven't tried it on the other 2 PCs yet as I'm a bit bedridden following a bad virus (real one:), so only playing on this Dell laptop, which has been 100% fine to date.
Will try deleting '..\Documents\Larian Studios' folder as per your suggestion now Raze...

----

...OK, wiping that folder & systematically adding the bits back proved is was the LevelCache folder contents in some way.
What do I lose if I rebuild that folder contents from scratch?

Can someone please explain to me how/why this is allowed to happen & why the game doesn't have an auto-safe mode to trap this kind of error/crash with decent exception handling...? *boggle*

Anyway, much thanks for all your patience & help guys. Another perfect gaming night still wasted though *sigh*.

You should not loose anything having the game recreate the D:OS My Documents folder, and then moving the saves from the renamed folder to the newly created profile.

I imagine you're correct, but after last night's scare I'm backing up all my saves after every session! smile
