I'm planning on destroying my Steam key and getting the GOG version of the full game instead (I always choose DRM-free), but the big advantage Steam usually has over GOG - at least until GOG Galaxy is launched - is fast and easy game patches/updates. In comparison to Steam, how often/quickly will game updates be posted to GOG? Thanks!

Your game is currently drm-free. It doesn't need steam to function and steam will just automatically update for you if you let it. I'm sure larian doesn't mind if you want to double dip but I can't see a reason to.

why would you destroy your Steam key?

I'm not talking about double-dipping - through the Larian Vault, there's an option to get a GOG version of the game instead of (not in addition to) the Steam version. And I just don't like having to run Steam in the background every time I play - so it's not really DRM-free. Anyway, personal preference.

So does anybody know the answer?

No one here can answer what will happen in the future, all we can do is look at what has happened so far. When Larian were patching the game almost daily, GOG was one or two days behind on average. With the patches slowing down now, it may be easier to stay in sync, and with the arrival of Galaxy in a month or so it is supposed to get better.

You do not have to run steam in the background. Close steam, go to your game folder, and click on the executable. The game will run fine.

You just won't get updates.

Windemere - I was hoping Larian would explain this somewhere (as they can see the future smile ), but your answer is helpful - thanks!

Tyhan - in that case, it's different than the alpha/beta, when you had to run Steam in the background. You could run it "offline," but it was still required. Anyway, good to know.
