As soon as I enter combat with my 4 member team they annoyingly alter positions placing low armoured mages in front(closest position) and moving lower movement warrior or efficient damage dealers further from the front line where I originally had placed them.
Why would you program teams to these idiotic movement patterns when their armour and damage skills would place them in completely opposite positions??? The way I logically position team members would be as follows... for low armour level distance damage dealers (mages/ranged archers) doing long range damage best positioned in rear (in back of team combat grouping) or close quarters ( higher armoured) damage dealing warrior/Rogue positioned in front lines to take Agro and deal close quarter weapon damage. It is completely ludicrous to program team movements in the completely opposite way as you have... Why bounce teams to these reverse positions at the beginning of battles???? Makes game so FRUSTRATING!!!

Combat formation is set completely manually, it is you putting the mages in front and melee in back.

You choose the combat formation above your top character portrait. Default is a square.

The order your characters are in the lefthand portraits is the order they fill out the formation.

Move your mages portraits to below the melee characters portraits to have the melee characters in front of the mage characters.

Glad to have helped.

I'm more annoyed by the fact that my characters will often run back into formation when combat starts, which can sometimes make things awkward. This notably occurs when I'm trying to backstab an opponent - my stealthed rogue will attack the enemy, combat will start, and then the majority of the time he'll automatically race across the map to rejoin the rest of my party two screens away.

Not really a big deal, but definitely odd. I don't see why your characters can't remain in their current positions when combat is triggered, to make the pre-battle set-up a bit more meaningful.

If your characters are not chained/linked together they should not run into the formations. At least mine do not do that when I start combat with invisibility+backstab.

Usually my other characters aren't even in the fight when I initiate with backstab, I then have to manually run them into the battle at which point those characters assume formation but the backstabber stays where he was.

Out of combat,the selected player will be the party leader and the party members will follow in formation according to the chain order, excluding the selected player

(x is selected)
[1].......[X]..[1]
[2] =>
[X].......[2]..[3]
[3]

In combat, they will create a formation in the exact order of the chain

[1].......[1]..[2]
[2] =>
[3].......[3]..[4]
[4]
