I just figured that the red cursor when i moused over certain objects meant that NPCs would consider it to be stealing if I were to click or interact with that object.

Then I started to noticed it happens for things even such as doors or bookshelves.

Ive even found that the only way to complete some quests is to actually open a door that is red to open.

What exactly are the game rules and mechanics behind this? If im in a library that ive been told I can read the books in, will the guards jump me if I click on something that has a red cursor?

If im in a shop, and open a door thats got a red cursor (but not locked) will the store owner stop me? Will the guards come?

If I try to open a container (unlocked) that has a red cursor, in front of other NPCs, but dont actually TAKE anything, will it cause any kind of negative reaction with NPCs?

If I move and item like a box, that has a red cursor, will it cause a negative reaction with NPCs?

Im trying to roleplay my characters as good, non-stealing characters, but it seems like I have to be super careful what I click on. Soooo many things in most peoples are 99% red when I mouse over them with the cursor. Its making me paranoid when I click for fear of accidently clicking something that will set off the guards or lower the NPC's attitude towards my group.

Yes, red doors and the like are considered trespassing. You will be stopped if spotted.

For the library, talk to library and request permission
If you're in the store trying to find an alternate entrance in the back.
If you open the container even you don't take anything the guard. You try sneaking.
Moving a box will cause issues so do it from a distance with telekinesis.

I am still in the first city, we appear to play similar, but it appears to be really difficult to rp lawful good. I may go so far to say you are going to have to occasionally steal, especially if you wish to have an number of coins.

Yes, you can only pick what's white/yellowish then in the library (so not the chest for example). They 'catching rats' book seems broken in that it remains red even with permission though.

If it's your first offense they will simply repremande you (with an attitude penalty), and if you stole items you would need to return them. Too many times though and yes, guards will be called.

Yes.

As for why pretty much everything is red in people's houses, well, it's their stuff. This isn't a RPG where the houseowners will simply stand by while you loot them (while it was funny in Baldur's Gate, not working here).
