Hello. I never play this game and just got it, but I am a BG/BG2/IWD/NWN veteran so I think I'll manage.

The thing is, you guys can probably save me a few hours of experimenting - I want to main a rogue that is good at stabbing people to chunks, but the other skills don't really seem to complement it - expert marksmenship appears to be in the line of ranged characters (I was thinking about being melee/daggers), man-at-arms seems to be something for tanks and the rest appear to be intelligence based skills.

Should I bother with pickpocketing/lockpicking? I know sneaking should be a prime since I obviously want to stab people.

Thanks!

Just make sure to take the talent Backstabber. I found Guerrilla to be very nice too.

I think having a Ranger/Rogue hybrid is nice. So Expert Marksman + Scoundrel skills.

I suggest you start with Invisibility and Fast Track for sure. The third skill is up to you.

This is my opinion anyway.

The reason I'm not running a backstabbing rogue is mostly because the backstab hit area is ridiculously small and it gets tedious to position yourself correctly.
To combat this problem a bit I suggest as many AP's per turn as possible so you get more bang for your buck (more stabs per time moved). Ie: the Glass Cannon talent and good speed.

It really depends on your party composition though. I would personally go with:
- 1 Lone Wolf Backstabber as the main damage dealer with 2 mages who crowdcontrol and buff.

The great thing about these crowdcontrol/buff spells is that you don't need high int for it. Just enough to get 100% chance to apply and for gear requirements. This leaves you with more speed so you can do more per turn and just let your rogue do all the killing. When something goes wrong, stealth/invis spell and regroup.

Oh and btw, don't bother with the "rogue" skills (lockpicking or pickpocket are fairly pointless)

Thanks for the replies. I am not sure for solo runs as my first go, but I did chose an air/water guy as my backup.
