I know the answers to get solve the quest, but I've been holding onto this quest to solve it "legitimately".

The problem is that the book "Philosophy of Death" (which you are supposed to reference for the quest) is bugged - the pages are blank. So, when Nemris the Philosopher quizzes you on the material within the book, the questions make no sense and the player is stuck guessing at the answers.

Any chance a fix for this can make it into one of the patches?

Is it actually bugged or just a ridiculous in joke? Philosophy of Death ... Great big empty pages... and a guy that quizzes you on it with what seems to be a nihilistic attitude.

In the english.xml file you can find:

The Philosophy of Death

Let us briefly discuss life and death, the great opposites; the great equals.

Death is greater than life, so sayeth the priest, for in death comes the gods' just reward. But if this be true, whether that reward shall be the solace of heaven or the agony of hell is decided during one's lifetime and therefore life is much greater than death, for it is the decision maker.

And what of those who care not for the gods, who question the afterlife; the existence of deities? Life is life's own goal they say; a wise sentiment I echo, and that even priests would do well to heed. But O how often does doubt assail these revellers of life! How often does fear approach with the creeping of the shadows... So great becomes the looming horror that death becomes larger than life and death becomes the greater force.

Forget the promise of gods I say, but defy the fear of oblivion as well, for only if life and death become each other's equals can the philosophy of death become one of life. Death is the instigator of faith and fear, but only if you let it be so. If you can gaze into its obsidian eyes, knowing it is the be all and the end all, but fear neither, then shall you have reached the shores of wisdom.

So sayeth Nemris.

I had considered that the book being blank was intentional, but the questions and references made during the "quiz" are too specific, as if they are definitely referring to something the player should have read.

I wonder if reading this is supposed to trigger an advancement in the quest journal, and/or experience reward. At the moment the blank book does neither.

I thought the book being blank was a deliberate joke... then proceeded to get all three questions right on the first try through sheer dumb luck. I never even realized it was broken!

I also thought the book being blank was a deliberate joke. A hilarious one.

Ohhh. That's what happened?

Yeah, they should fix that. I was so confused when the ghost started asking *very* specific questions about the content of a blank book...

Indeed. I just started a new game, 1.0.81.0, and I was surprised this still isn't fixed. :\

If I hadn't read this post I would never know. I thought that book was a hilarious and clever joke (if they are going to fix this, maybe they should just change the quest to work with the joke!), also I got all answers right the first try, maybe they were obvious or more likely somehow, I'm not sure.

I doubt the book will give a questupdate... like other books it's just a hint, not a walkthrough.

But yes, I also had to save-scum the sollution since the book is broken.
