You need to drag in an item that you want from the vendor's inventory, or drag in gold. With your side full and their side of the trade empty, you're asking to get nothing in return.
If you just want gold, as long as the vendor actually has some (not all do), you can hit the button at the top center that looks like an old-school balance scale. That'll bring in the exact amount of gold that your stuff will sell for.
