Hey all. I'm finally getting around to installing the D:OS Kickstarter Collector's Edition, but after installing 2GB from the included DVD, it begins a 5.6GB download from Steam. This is a problem, it's going to take a really long time to complete (the timer fluctuates from ~16 to nearly 24 hours as my speed goes up and down) and it's also hell on my download cap. Is this really necessary? I understand that patches are going to happen, but this is almost triple the amount of data that installed off the disc, which is ridiculous by any measure. Why buy a disc-based game if we're going to have to download 80% of it after the fact anyway?

Am I doing something wrong, or is this really how it is?

Well gog installer for example is almost 9 GB + patches 600 mb (and gog has the most compressed installer), so whatever you have on a disc is definitely not enough.

The voices were not on the disc, as they were added too late to make it on the first run of discs. That's a large part of why the download is so large.

Still, to go from 2GB on disc to 7.6GB total is a huge jump. Voices can take up a lot of space, but that much? Did you (or anyone else) have the same issue?

Also, I paused the Steam update with 900MB left to go and when I resumed, it started over again. I'll be lucky to be playing by Sunday. frown

As far as I can tell, all the sounds in the game (including voices) come to a total of ~2.6 GB.

That bug happens to me too frequently (on a variety of Steam games). It's annoying as heck.

Makes me wonder sometimes why I bother buying physical. I love the extras, but a big part of it is to avoid all this slow, bandwidth-cap-sucking downloading. By the time this is over (it's still going at the time of writing, btw) I will have downloaded more than 15GB for a game I bought on disc.

I'd rather have updates than be stuck with a buggy disc.

15GB??? What for? Should only be 2GB in total to download with the physical disc at hand.

And even then, I thought internet in Canada would be good...

I overstated - it was actually around 10GB in total. Just before the first 5.6GB download was complete, something went wrong, it reset and I had to do it all over again. Not too happy about that.

And yes, updates are better than being stuck with a buggy disc. My complaint is that 5.6GB is a LOT of updating. And more important than the complaint was the question whether or not it was actually necessary, or if something wasn't working correctly with the disc install.
